Robin in a rubbish bin - it always amazes me what people throw away :)

I had a Sunday walk around my local lake and found myself being followed by a pair of Robins. This was quite suprising as Robins are very territorial. In the end one Robin did chase the other away. What I do have is a few Robin shots; Robins on bins, Robins on trees, Robins on the ground...

Robin Territory from the RSPB Website:
The robin is one of the few birds that hold a territory all year round. In summer a territory is defended by a mated pair, while each bird holds individual winter territories.

Breeding territories average 0.55ha in size about six would fit onto an average sized football pitch while winter territories are around half of this. The exact size depends on the quality of habitat and the density of birds in the area. In some areas, such as Scottish pinewoods with well-spaced, mature trees and few shrubs, breeding densities can be as low as 10 pairs/sq km, while a lowland woodland can support as many as 200-300 pairs/sq km.

Territory boundaries are fluid, and change frequently as circumstances change.

The possession of a good territory is a key to survival. A territory gives each robin exclusive food supplies all year. Any bird unable to secure a territory is doomed to die of starvation, so there is a strong incentive for each robin to carve out a patch. In some cases, territory defence results in a fight, and it is not unusual for one of the birds to die of its injuries. In some populations, up to 10% of adult mortality is accounted for by territorial disputes.

The sole purpose of a robin's red breast is in territory defence: it is not used in courtship. A patch of red triggers territorial behaviour, and robins are known to persistently attack stuffed robins and even tufts of red feathers.

Here in the States we have more people gathering from rubbish bins than birds...times are tough for many. Your bird is an exceptionally nice pose...you'll be up there with Nick I suppose now. Your colours show well here...and very finely detailed. Karen it is a genuinely nice image.

What fine stalkers you had for your walk!!
I am a big fan of Robins and this is a lovely sharp picture showing him in all his glory.
Robins as you say are very territorial but I wonder if the pair that stalked you were visitor?...I have just one Robin that visits my garden generally but now there are 3 and they seem to tolerate each other..This will obviously change in the spring when they look to breed.

A beautiful Robin perched on a very strange thing in a really nice pose. The colors are just wonderful. Fine details of the face, wings and plummage. Lucky you to have two Robins following you!

Lovely capture of the cute Robin, excellent pose with great eye contact, nice details and perfectly saturated colours, they do say that the UK Robins are the cheekiest which is great for us getting brill shots like this, its funny what you say about the territorial Robins as I have seen a few hanging around together lately too.

Hi Karen. A good close up of the Robin. It seems where ever you go a Robin appears. you have captured this with fine detail and natural colours. A Nice Pose with the Head turned around. well done TFS.

I love the way Robins are so interested and inquisitive towards humans.
We have a familier Robin in our garden and whenever I go outside it follows me around!
The pose is superb and the eye-contact this little guy is giving you is priceless!
The colours are very vibrent and rich.
Excellent POV, DOF, BG and composition.
