Common Collared Lizard
This curious little guy came out to see what was happening when I came to take pictures at the rock art site at the Palatki Heritage Archaeological site. The rock art is directly behind me in this picture.

Males of this species are perhaps the most colorful lizards found in the southwest during their mating season. Perhaps he thought I was a receptive female. In any regard, he left after deciding that mating with my camera might not work. LOL!!!

You can read more about this species here:
Common Collared Lizard

Most amazing is that adults can run with incredible speed while standing up on their hind legs. I've tried chasing them before and can attest to that ability. But they are a very curious animal so you are better off remaining still and letting them come to you.

Hi

what a beautifull coloured lizard! I like lizards, frogs and snakes, so i'm looking forward to spring. Luckely i've got pictures like this one to make me happy!
You captured the colours really well. a bit low light, but the bright yellow spots make it all up! Beautifull detailed picture. Well done!

TFS, Thijs

Hi SC

A great shot showing this lizard in its natural environment. Fortunately this guy is apparently used to visitors at the rock art site and obviously did not feel threatened or intimidated by your presence. You must have worn some weird outfit to lead this guy on to think you might have been a receptive female. Unfortunately you do not have a photo of yourself on your intro page so I cannot judge if the lizard was justified in its perceived thoughts (chuckle).

I just love the vertical composition, obviously making space for that long tail. The details are very sharp and the colours are well saturated. I must say though, that the colours look quite different from the Common Collared Lizard you posted previously. Although having another good look at those shots again made me see the faint indications of the yellow bands across the back. So it just made me wonder, which colour scheme is the normal display and which might be the breeding colours. Ok, so maybe this shot is the breeding colours and that's why you though this guy came out to mate with either you or your camera(?)

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi SC

Great shot of this colourful lizard. The F717 has given you a really good saturated shot here. DOF is impressive as is the sharpness.

Chris

Hi SC,
you did a dreamshot! And you had the nerve to completely master the composition of your shot: the tail is on, the animal eyes you suspiciously, just great!
My best regards
Dietrich

Hi Steve,

A fantastic shot of this lizard - and you got all of him! I haven't seen one of these with the wonderful colors. Excellent details of the face, skin and tail. The setting is beautiful - but after all it's Sedona.

Jane

Hallo SC
You have captured this Collared Lizard so well. He is lovely and sharp, we can see all his very interesting textures and patterns so clearly. Superb shot showin fantastic details. The eye, paws with sharp nails and that long tail is a definite eye-cacther. Splendid macro work. I was pleasanty surprised with this one, as I am used to your portfolio being full of mostly flowers. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
