This morning I had the same experience as Claudine. I heard a screaming bird.
Then I saw a flying Sparrow-Hawk with a Starling in his claws flying to my backyard. The Sparrow-Hawk landed on the side of the ditch, witch is around my house. There I could make some pictures. This is one of them. After the Hawk was taken some bites, the Starling would escape as yet. It was struggling for his life. But it was no use. The Sparrow-Hawk flew away with its prey.

Hi Peter,
Are you sure that his prey is not a Starling? It looks like one to me because of its colors and wings pattern. This is a coincidence indeed :) I see that you used a slow shutter speed but those things happen so quickly aren’t they? We can still appreciate great details on the bird's head. You had good reflex. As it for mine, the bird didn't even have time to scream, it happened in a wink of an eye... Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Peter,

A wonderful action shot of this hawk doing what hawks do. Excellent details showing the determination in the hawk's face. I feel sorry for the little sparrow but........ A good shot of real Nature.

Jane

wauw prachtige capture.
dit zijn van die moment opnamen. Je moet in een moment alles goed hebben staan. Jammer dat je hier je speed wat langzaam had staan, verder uitekende capture, goed fotowerk.
groet Jaap

Hi Peter
Nice action shot! I have seen similar situation when Sparrow-Hawk was attacking small birds but newer get any possibilities to take any shots. It is few seconds action and party is over. Those times Sparrow-Hawk didn't catch any bird but it was interesting experience.
Well done and TFS

Groetjes,
Paul

Hi peter,

Yes indeed, when these hawks catch a prey, it doesn't take long to kill them, a fraction of a second. You were very alert to manage to take this shot, Congratulations and thanks for sharing it!

Lise

Hello Peter
This is a fantastic capture of the female sparrowhawk taking the starling. I have witnessed this a few times but never have taken a shot...With your low shutter speed its remarkable that you managed to get the shot as sharp as you did..the head and eyes is perfectly sharp and the blur of the wings truly shows the action.
Many Many thanks for sharing this one.

Hello Peter,
A fantastic action shot of a male Sparrow Hawk just taking its Starling prey, You made maximum use of the poor light and with such a low shutter speed you have achieved great sharpness taken it from a fine POV that shows the Sparrow Hawk's eye. Well done Peter!
Thanks for sharing this fine capture,
Ivan

Hi Peter

Happy New Year - I am just back from New Zealand and Japan.

I think the blurring is most effective and captures the moment perfectly.

in my all live I've seen only very seldom preybirds in such close hunting action (buzzard 3x, goshawk 1x). Never get the chance of any shot. You must be indeed vey fast and alert to manage this.
Groetjes

Halo Peter,

Hello Peter,
Fantastic action shot you've got here! Very good timing with great focus on the eye of the Sparrowhawk. We get it sweeping down through our garden too but I don't think he's caught anything here yet. Excellent work!
Many thanks, Ulla

hello Peter

viewing at the blur of the starling we can imagine
how hard and viloent was the attack, and how much
energy is putting the straling to save his life,

we often see the bird of preys after their attack with
their trophy (the poor little bird), in your photo
we are asssiting the attack of the hawk
and the Struggle of the straling and that brings
a plus to your photo, an action photo, TFS
