[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It is the pinnacle or the epitome of "Where they really live". Although it is a rare sight, the location was one I passed every day when taking kids from the remote mountaintop to the still remote bus stop where they sat in the car to stay warm until the bus came by. It is so remote and so unusual with winter weather that it would take over 9 inches of snow falling at one time before the buses would even be late and 12 inches before schools would close. If the winter went by and no snow days were used, then they would be added on to spring vacation.

Pictured is the remote wilderness confluence area of 4 creeks. Together here the beavers created two rather large dams. You can see the water rippling. It isn't from anything visible, but from an otter swimming beneath the water and under the Blue Heron, searching along with it in it's own way for Rainbow Trout which also come to this location. And because it is on Native American Allotment land, only a handful of people can pass through here on foot. I was privileged to be one.And here from the small gravel road nearby I stood and watched as so many creatures gathered at once. Behind me in a tall dead tree was a Bald Eagle perched not far but about 75 feet high. To my left was a pheasant walking through the snowy brush. The beavers were safely in their den....My purpose here was multi fold. The area changes in ebbs and lows every second. At one moment there will be many things. At other times it will have an unbearable silence. The area is usually very dark, for sun hits it only about 1 hour per day due to it's location next to a mountain and its covering of high fir and pine trees.

I just happened to be here photographing the beauty of winter when the heron decided to land on the log crossing the streams and pond. Although he was not my original subject, I included him thinking perhaps he made a perfect finishing touch to the landscape. Here it was 3pm and already getting dark...temperatures were at approximately -15 Celsius. The camera was my Fijifilm Pro with Nikkor 85mm lens. This is the landscape of the wilderness "Where they really live"

A poetic note and photograph. Knowing the origin of the ripple adds a lot. The picture itself gives a real feeling of winter.

A wonderful winter scene in the wilderness. The Heron is a bonus. Not many of us see something like this. As always your notes added meaning to the photograph.

Hi Bob. A very nice winters compostion but with the Heron as well . I like the use of the light which give a cold blue to the shot which make it feel cold. good detail . as always good notes as well. TFS.

I hope the heron is not suffering of the winter season. I thought this can of bird would go south before the cold season start. The point of view is giving depth to the photo. A good capture of the ripples in the water, have a nice day.

This is beautiful my friend and reminds me a lot of a place I would love to sit and listen, but as Lucy says " You never wear your hearing aids" These are sounds I miss, not the Clang and Clatter of the City. Hello Bob,
I like this image very much. Not only is it a well composed scene of a calm stretch of water in winter, it also shows the way the heron has used the log for his fishing, the snow having fallen into the water where he stood on different parts of the log. This can no way be described as an action shot but shows where the action was and where the actor is!
