Andes Organ Pipe - Cereus hildmannianus

This columnar cactus is used as decorative landscaping in the Soutwestern USA. Data about it is hard to track down and some of it conflicting.

Other common names for this cactus include 'Apple Cactus' for its large red fruit and 'Queen of the Night' for the large blooms that open at night. But 'Queen of the Night' is also a common name for several cacti species. It is also described as a 'hedge cactus'.

Even it's species is in question. It is most often called Cereus peruvianus. According to CactiGuide.com Cereus peruvianus is the 'best and least well known cactus'. Peruvianus is a catchall name for several species of decorative columnar cacti like this one. Read more about it here:

I believe this cactus is native to South America. The USDA says it has been introduced into the US in both Hawaii and Puerto Rico where it has now become "naturalized". They categorize it as a 'noxious weed'.

This specimen was found on Southern Ave in Mesa, Arizona USA about one mile or so (1-2 kilometers) west of the Superstition Springs Mall.

This may be the only picture I took of this cactus that did not have bees buzzing all around everywhere. The hum of bees was so intense that it was scary, especially since most bees in southern Arizona are africanized (killer) bees.

I have no idea what these flowers are. I've never seen these before. Very pretty and a good shot with nice colors and good details.

This is a stuningly sharp image Stephen with perfect exposure.

I'm happy to report that my slideshow debut at the camera club went really well last evening. It was snowing pretty good by the time we got there but still had a good turn out.

Certainly well thought out...either quickly by a mind like the eye of an eagle or take your time and do it right...or maybe a dozen times...but whatever a great image...You do that camera justice!

Can't help with the ID but I can say that you used the odd numbers to your advantage. Three flowers and three main stalks. great composition. And there is a bee. he is hovering right on the lower flower on the left side on one of the secondary petals. At least it is not a swarm of killer bees;)
