[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The geometrids, also known as inchworms or loopers, are so named because of the way they move, appearing to measure the earth (the word geometrid means earth-measurer in Greek). The primary reason for this unusual locomotion is the elimination of nearly all the prolegs except the clasper on the terminal segment.

Caterpillars have soft bodies that can grow rapidly, like balloons, between moults. Only the head capsule is hardened. In caterpillars, the mandibles are tough and sharp for chewing leaves; in most adult Lepidoptera, the mandibles are highly reduced, or soft. Behind the mandibles of the caterpillar are the spinnerets, for manipulating silk.

Some larvae of the Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps) order can appear like the caterpillars of the lepidoptera. These are mainly seen in the Sawfly family and while the larvae superficially resemble caterpillars, they can be distinguished by the presence of prolegs on every abdominal segment. Another difference is that lepidopteran caterpillars have crochets or hooks on the prolegs while these are absent on the sawfly larvae. Also in lepidopteran caterpillars is the upside down Y shaped suture on the front of the head. The larvae of sawflies differ also in having prominent ocelli on the head capsule.

This small inchworm is on a Morning Glory flower, and it was shot with early morning light.

Hi Howard.
Very interesting note for charming close-up flower picture. Its composition and framing are selected skillfully. I say – artistically. Light is so impressive and colours are reproduced excellently. They are delicate and very pleasant to eyes. I do not know what is better: present level of sharpness/blurriness (I mean selected DOF) or more wider DOF. It is art task. And you have solved it very nicely. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

Wow Howard, you're a man of surprises, this shot is stunning! At first, I thought that you shot the etamins of the flower and then realized it's a worm! Great shot, beautiful colours bathed in great light and this pov is so nice. I love the softness of the petals. I had never such a big inchworm! Thank you very much!

Hello Howard,
Well you learn something new everyday, I would never have guessed looking at the image it was a form of inchworm or looper, stunning colours with excellent detail, well framed, all the best Cheers Rick :)

Hi Howard

Hmmm, no comment on the action neither on the intimation. All I can say is well spotted and interpreted / alluded to.

You mentioned though that this shot was taken in the early morning light which makes me wonder if the little caterpillar knows the saying, "The early bird catches the early worm". It implicates that this little guy shouldn't appear as confident as it might be gobbled up by the birds.

The lovely pink "Morning glory" created an excellent BG to place emphasis on the very erect and arrow-straight little monster of an "Inchworm". Excellent sharp details, lovely colours, and a great balance in DOF makes this a pleasure on the eyes. The exposure management was first class as there is quite contrasting colours and shades that could have complicated the shoot considerably. You did amazing work of the task though.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello my talented old friend,
You offer us a smart and original composition ! Aesthetic and technic are great as usual. Funny this caterpilar like a little branch... I discover a 400D and a new portrait of you ;-)
Bravo Howar and thanks for sharing,

Very original image Howard!
From the thumbnail I thought it was an especially long stigma... or is it stamen.
I love how these little caterpillars move in the classic caterpillar way :)
Great clarity, detail and sharpness.
Nice colours and the pink BG is beautiful!
Well done!
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Howard
I have never seen so elegant and artistc shot of geometrid caterpillar. There is nothing more to say here Fantastic!
Best wishes
Krzysztof

I have to compliment your note more because I would not have known what that was otherwise. The photo is great and the pink and green compliment each other. Great job. I don't think there is another Inch Worm on TN.

Hi Howard,
I like those photos that make you need to look a bit closer to figure out what you are looking at. I am alos glad that a note comes with the photo as well. It does help. :)
I like the details in the worm and the way you played with the DOF to make the pink flower look even softer.
its camo is also perfect, I would have walked by it thinking it was a young twig. The lighting iluminated the photo perfectly.
TFS,
Niek

One weird dude!

Hello Howard,

When I saw the thumbnail my first reaction was: that is a large tamping-bar !!! After a closer look and reading your notes it will be perfectly clear. This is a perfectly camouflaged caterpillar. Wonderful close-up. Nice colors, perfect POV and BG. Greetings and TFS BOB

Hello Howard,
An amazing little creature, that for sure will fool many hungry birds by his appearance!
