Hello friends in TN,

I was quite lucky this morning as I was driving my children to the nearby playground. This bird which I have never spotted before was on a tree close to the road by the river. I pulled on the curb and captured this through the car's window. As I got down to take a shot away from the branch blocking part of the bird, sure enough it flew away.

It looks like a sparrow to me but I would be grateful if someone can ID this bird for me.

Thanks to inked for helping me ID this bird and corrected to Blue-tailed BE.

I'll have to agree with Argus after further research and Mr Steve Pryor for the clarification. Appreciated all!!!

The Blue-tailed Bee-eater is a truly gorgeous bird with very graceful flight. Often seen sitting in the tops of dead trees in small colonies they dash out with undulating flight to take insects.

hi Jusni,
looks like a bee-eater to me... maybe a rainbow bee eater? im no expert though and thats pretty much a guess =)

nice one, whatever it is.. interesting composition from that viewpoint with the perch coming from above. well focused and nice lighting bringing out the details in the plumage.. well done and thanks for sharing
Gethin

Bonjour,
Que voilà un perchoir idéal et un oiseau bien coloré.
Bonne journée.
clnaef

Nice shot. well focussed. But I think increasing the exposure of the off-white background thereby making it white will make the bird stand out much more against the background.

Hi Jusni

This is a beauty - the colors and light are splendid on this beeeater. If I may say so, the picture appears a little cold once again. Perhaps its to do with the setting for white balance in your camera.

Thanks
Ravi

This Bee Eater is a different species from the one I have posted on TN recently, Jusni.
It is a good capture with the features and colours on the bird quite distinct.
TFS and regards.

Hello Jusni,
For once I have to correct Cuckooroller who usually spot on in his ID's.
The Rainbow Bee-eater does not occur west and north of Java, if so this would be a vagrant. But there are other ID factors that make this a BLUE-TAILED BEE-EATER (Merops superciliosus philippinus). It lacks the black chin-stripe of the Rainbow and the rainbow has a pale somewhat bluish breast.
This is an excellent image of a Blue-tailed bee-eater with fine sharpness and detail and set in an excellent composition.
Well done Jusni, and thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

Excellent image with fine sharpness and detail....

Yes, Gethin (inked) is right in his correction.

EDIT: Not that I care that much because I do occasionally make mistakes, but I stand by the above statement. Originally ID'ed as Rainbow BE - and, I knew that anything not in Australia, PNG, or the Sundas just wasn't it. I looked under the Discussion Thread (the earliest by inked and saw "correction: its a blue-tailed bee-eater". In other words, Merops philippinus. A note on the taxonomy. This taxon forms a superspecies with M. persicus, and with M. superciliosus (sensu stretto). In the past all three have sometimes been treated as being conspecific (i.e., lumped together). Now, all three are generally considered to be good species.

Hi Jusni,
A very good capture of this gorgeous bird!
I like so much the clean and elegant view caught here, and the silhouette pose of the bird.
What an eye and determination to take the time for this shoot when driving!
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Jusni, it is such a nice picture and how funny it is that you were taking your children at a playground as this bird looks like he is sitting and balancing itself. It is delicate, I love that suspension in the "air" and I like this composition, it is beautiful. Thank you!

Francine

Hi Jusni

Wow! You don't see these birds every day on TN. Nice capture Jusni. Nice sharp detail, good composition and soft lighting.

The nice thing about TN is usually there is someone out there who can help us identify things.

merhaba Jusni,
very lovely capture of beautiful bee-eater. It looks like a bit alone, but I think that it really looked for some preys, e.g. bee or other insects.
You presented it with a great capture, composition, POV. focus and BG also very nice. Thanks for sharing. best wishes
Ahmet

Hallo Jusni
What an elegant and charming bee-eater you have here. I just love his swanky tuft. Lovely autumn coloured feathers. I like the black stripe through the eye. And talking about the eye, it is quite eye-catching. The colour of it is remarkable. The sharp beak and the long tail create a nice pattern to the image. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.
Kind regards
Anna

I am trying to figure out what time it is over there...my you are fast..and this was an interesting post. I had noticed it before, but thought perhaps you had left for a bit. It certainly is as worthy as any posts you do. I also hope you will post a turkey image here if that is possible..There are so few of that variety and are well worthwhile seeing...I shall return tomorrow..It has been a loooong day here...and if you are interested I have started doing some quasi serious YouTube things...but that is just now growing..

Beautiful bird and a great photography. Jusni, I am attempting to shoot as good as this. The birds are still too far away from me.

Hello Jusni,
I like your composition showing this Bee-eater in a nice pose on the branch against a plain background. Excellent sharpness and natural colours. Well done!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Jusni,
This bee-eater looks really very nice! The colors are fantastic and the plumage comes out very well.
A great shot! The composition works well, just a bit a pity that there's this upper out-of-focus branch, which is somehow disturbing. But that's a critique at a very high level :-)
Greetings, Mike

Hello Jusni,

Hello Jusni,
This is a lovely capture of Blue tailed Bee eater. They are such colourful and beautiful birds, aren't they? Here I have often seen them sitting on branches covered with leaves except for the one time when i saw them perching on an electric wire close to the road and which i posted in TN. I liked the POV and pose of the bird captured here against a clear background . Good sharpness and details. Thanks for the share,
Regards,
Smitha.
