Too Close for Comfort

| Here is a straight-on portrait of an alpha male lion in a pride of maybe a dozen others in Sabi Sand Game Preserve. This private reserve shares a border with Kruger Nat'l. Park, but it gets only a fraction of the visitors. Water runs year-round here, so wildlife spotting is excellent -- especially for lions. I was shooting from the standard open-top Range Rover safari vehicle, and I could not believe how close we were. This shot was at the most 10 meters away. He didn't seem bothered -- obviously he's used to seeing vehicles with the weird humanoids on board. I was shooting digital primarily, but this shot is from film, so the palate is a little softer. The corresponding digital image is crisper. I'd purchased several bricks of Fuji film and the last couple dozen rolls had been sitting in the freezer for a couple years, so I decided to finish it off here. I like the results, Old School as they are. |

This is something I would love to do before I die -- go to Africa to visit a preserve like this. I think your film did well capturing this considering its age. It's really not that soft on focus on my monitor. Great look on his face...he does seem a bit bored with it, doesn't he. Nice framing. Cheers! Penny

Good catch - though I believe the image must have lost quite a bit of detail by the scanning process.
But a great shot it is - simply majestic!
Cheers, Klaus
