Iris unguicularis # 1
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Algerian or Winter Iris (Iris unguicularis), is a rhizomatus plant, of the dry Mediterranean climate, grows to 30cm tall and will do well in a partially shady position. Iris unguicularis gives flowers in winter and early spring. The flowers bloom within long grass-like evergreen foliage.
Iris unguicularis has a disjunct distribution. North Africa: Algeria and Tunisia and the eastern Mediterranean: west and south Turkey and adjacent Syria, where they grow around the coastal fringe or at low elevations.
This pattern was brought about by the spilling over of the Atlantic Ocean at the land bridge which is now the Straits of Gibralter, and the subsequent flooding of the Mediterranean basin, thus wiping out the populations in between (the distribution data, have given from St. Andrews Botanical Garden Site: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~gdk/stabotanic/mar04pom.htm)
I took this photo under light rain, in the University Botanical Garden, Jerusalem. |
