Another Milkweed, common name is Butterfly Weed, Asclepias tuberosa. This beautiful orange-flowered Milkweed seems to prefer open woods and prairies with sandy soils, although I do know of one local prairie remnant here that has them growing in a heavier clay soil. Atypical of the genus Aclepias, its juice is not a milky latex, instead it's clear. The plant is toxic, and this toxic quality is passed on to the larvae of butterflies that consume its leaves, conferring the insects with a distasteful quality. As its name implies, it's quite popular with adult butterflies too.
This plant is found throughout most of North America, absent mainly west of the Rocky Mountains. It's a herbaceous perennial that blooms in early summer, with flowers varying in color from almost scarlet to a bright orange yellow, but most flowers are brilliant orange.
The plant is fairly easily grown in the home garden, and there has been some work done to develop varieties with different color flowers, but the wild form with bright orange flowers seems to be the most popular. |
