Southern Yellowjacket - Vespula squamosa
Male
Size: 12.7mm (1/2")

Wasps, such as Yellowjackets which are considered to be social wasps, overwinter. But, the entire colony doesn't overwinter, only the new fertilized queen does, which is similar to that of Bumble Bees. The workers and old queen die off when the weather starts getting cold and the new queen finds a suitable place to overwinter. The following spring she emerges and finds a new place for a nest, which is not the old nest from last year. She makes a brand new one to start her new colony. So, if you happen to see a Yellowjacket nest in winter you don't have to tear it down because they won't be back to it in spring but the new queen may build her new nest in the same vicinity.

Hello Sam,
Read your post in the forum. So decided to welcome you to TN even though it's bit late. But then again, it's better late than never.:)
This is a beautiful picture. Very good Point of view, focus, sharpness and details. I really liked thwe way you have captured even the tiny little hairs on the wasp. And I congratulate you for that. Very good lighting and well saturated colours. You know I have always found macro photography to be a difficult area. And you have done a very good job with your macro shot.
shall i make a suggestion? if you have the time, like if the subject is sure to sit for a long time for you to shoot,, play around a bit with the focus area so that you can get the whole of the subject in focus. Like those antenne in the head? you got my point? don't worry it's only a minor thing. I just wanted you to know how you can perfect your photgraphic skills.
Thanks for the share and Regards,
Smitha.
Welcome to TN,Sam. You will really like it here.:)

Hi Sam and welcome on TN!
It is really nice to see that a new insect lover is here! :)
According to this picture I have to say that it has a very good quality: very nice depth of field and sharpness, perfect, vivid colours, good contrast.
On the other hand it would be nice to see this picture a little larger :)
All the best from Poland!
Radomir

PS. Thank you for comment to my Lycosidae spider photo, unfortunatelly I do not have picture from different point of view, much more useful in ID process :)

Hi Sam,
Good macro, even if for my taste is a little bit too tightly cropped!
Lovely colors!
