Phoenicolacerta laevis (Hatay or Syrian Lizard) (A Male)

A medium-sized lizard with relatively long head, pointed snout and dark lateral bands. Typically, a large masseteric scale is present (this feature is same in P. troodica known from Cyprus, however it is the main distinguishing feature from P. kulzeri known from Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan). The other main distinguishing features between these closely related species was given in my previous posting. Therefore, I do not mention here again. The dorsal scales are usually keeled (whereas in the Cypriotic P. troodica these are almost smooth), organized in 51-61 longitudinal rows. There is a large anal plate, usually without granular scales between this plate and the anal slit. The background coloration varies from pale brown to grayish-brown, sometimes with olive-green or reddish hue. Typically, there are dark brown lateral (temporal) bands, starting from the nostrils, continuing on flanks and disappearing in the pelvic region, usually not extending along the sides of the tail. On the body, the upper and lower margin of the dark temporal (lateral) bands is often bordered scattered, sometimes fusing whitish dots (in Cypriotic P. troodica there are regular whitish subtemporal bands, starting from the labial plates, continuing on flanks and usually extending along the sides of the tail). Juvenilles have turquoise tails. Males are generally larger than females.

P. laevis is foraged both on the ground and on trunks and branches of various trees and bushes. Also, it can be observed on sun-exposed trunks of oaks or on stones and rocks, especially in the morning time. It feeds mainly on small arhropods. Females lay more clutches per year, each consisting of about 5-8 whitish elongated eggs.

The species is widespread in the eastern Mediterranean region, ranging from Turkey through Lebanon and Syria to Israel and W Jordan. In Turkey, It is known from the provinces of Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye and Içel (Mersin).

Ps. The photographed specimen is a well-developed "handsome" male from Çamlıyayla (İçel=Mersin province),in June 2007. Tomorrow I will upload a "beautifull" female to show the difference between the sexes in general view.
Thanks & Greetings friends!

Hola Bayram,
You are back on Turkish herptiles, I see, again a good specimen my friend, good open shade lighting enabled you to capture it in good definition, while our woodwork was enhancing the composition as usual. TFS.
Mehmet

Bayram Hocam selamlar.

Excellent shot of this nice lizard!
The amount of detail in the scales is incredible!
Superb sharpness and clarity.
DOF is a little shallow but that is the only nit.
Well composed and a good POV.
Well done Bayram,
Joe

Hello Bayram,
The sharpness of this fine image of the Syrian Lizard allows us to see the fine scales of this pecies. The tip of the tail is well sacrificed for us to see the details of the head and body from this POV and composition is as usual excellent.
Thanks for sharing this one. You must be writing a book with these fine images as illustrations, if not, you ought to and I would buy it!
Thanks for sharing this one,
