This, my dear friends, is one of my favourite gastropod shells from the Mediterranean-Aegean area, a Pelican's Foot shell (Aporrhais pespelecani) of almost 3.5 centimeters, yes, these are quite small but for me also very beautiful creatures. I would like to dedicate this macro shot to my former student, latter friend and colleague, Dr. Ahmet Karataş, aka rousettus, who introduced me to the wonderful world of "Treknature" a few months ago.

These sandy colored gastropods prefer the sublittoral sandy-muddy sea bottoms between ten to two hundred meters and live partly submerged to the substratum, uniquely feeding by producing long mucus strings and from time to time drawing these strings back to their mouths, together with the adhered small living and detritic material. The single foot is quite narrow and small, so the mollusc's forward motion is not continuous but interrupted, the foot raises the whole shell a little and at the same time pushes a little forward, thus the unbalanced shell "falls" forward, the foot again raises the shell, etc. This also is a method of locomotion unique to the Pelican's Foot snail. As you can observe, the shell has a distinct pointed apex and knobby ornaments on its whorls. The outer lip of the shell is enlarged into a plate and dominates the narrow aperture (will try to demonstrate it in another post), and usually is expanded into four long rays with fine points. The function of this expanded structure is to prevent the shell and the animal from uncontrollably sinking into the soft substratum.
This shell was recovered by a beam trawl from a muddy bottom 20 meters deep between Yeni Foça and Eski Foça, in the vicinity of Çandarlı Strait at the entrance of the Outer Bay of İzmir. The photo was taken under the unilateral light of a diffused photospot and a contra-placed crinkled aluminum folio passive diffuser-reflector over a dark background.

Hello Mahmet

I can see why you find this little gastropod so much...it's indeed very skillfully constructed.
The details here are remarkable, especially considering the size, and the DOF is spot-on, keeping all the edges of this shell is spot-on focus.
The side lighting is excellent and creates a very good 3D image for this.
Very nicely done!

Bravo and TFS

What a wonderful gallery!!!
Gorgeous subject matter - great artistic approach. Well done!!

Your whole gallery is inspiring, but I think this is my favorite. The detail and the structure of shell is amazing and the evolution behind the locomotion is even more amazing. Thanks for sharing your work!
