[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Okay, not a serious photo; this one was practice. I was mainly interested in seeing how much I could reasonably stop the action of a fishing Great Blue Heron. He was being unusually tolerant of me, but unfortunately a little too backlit for my taste -- no light in the eyes, either. But I think I got him stopped pretty good. The next frame shows him with the fish, but the fish is too tiny to be a major element in the picture. It is smaller than the heron's eye, so it looks like he grabbed a pea or something.

This bird is very skittish and normally he flies off when the camera appears. But this time he was concentrating too much on his fishing. I was also being more careful, camouflaging the lens and keeping the viewfinder covered when not looking through the camera, minimizing the "great blinking eye" effect of the 400mm lens. I used a TCE II 1.7x teleconverter as well. I have cropped out excess weeds at the bottom of the picture.

Fill flash was provided by a Better Beamer.

Hi Christopher,
let me say that or this Heron didnīt see you or you are the master of camouflage! You seem to be very close!!!
Although i like natural colours, this time i think that maybe the Heron needs a little more of light would be great, just to see better the feathers. Anyway, the shot is really good: POV, DOF and the moment you have captured!
have a nice day
