NEW ZEALAND’S SILVER FERN (Cyathea dealbata)

Here we see the Silver fern, the iconic fern frond, and the national symbol of New Zealand. The silver fern is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight.

A few months ago I posted a photo of a fern with the green leaves drying out and the ends were turning brown and brittle and were breaking off.

But this frond is now completely dead. Curled up, dry and brown. But you can still see the silver colouring on the other side. And notice the spores showing on some of the silver backing. I never realised until I was looking at these dead and dying ferns, that the green turns brown, but the silver side stays silver / white.

Ferns trees grow and as these older fronds die and drop to the ground, new greener, prettier fronds are growing from the centres. In a few months this old frond will be just drooping on the trunk and in time it was break off in the wind – no more, apart from turning into mulch.

Light made this picture, Janice! Awesome colours, lovely golden-brown mood. Great picture, pity that this plant is now dried... Last sunday, just after our return, I took few pictures of young ferns in Botanical Garden for you. Expect it on TN after Romanian flood :-)

halo Janice!
Next wonderful arty photo. I see how your photos are changing with new camera and with automn. This is very interesting.

Always a bit sad to see a fern frond die and turn brown after it's spectacular beginning. Nice shot Janice and Greg is right. The light was good to you. Thanks
