[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a small wasps's nest that I had knocked down from under the wooden roof of a veranda. It was lying in the grass and some of the wasps were still circling around it, trying to find out what happened. This was mid-June which is before they become active, and the interesting thing about this macro is the sight of all the eggs of various sizes - and of course the overall structure of the nest. I know next to nothing about insects, so I can't give you their exact name, history and feeding and breeding habits. All I can say is that removing this one nest didn't do us much good. August 2004 will long be remembered for the wasp plague in Northern Europe. And there again, other will know better than I why this was so.

I cropped, resized and sharpened in PSP - in that order.

Per, Good photo showing the egg deposit activity very well. They look similiar and are probably in the same family as the "Paper Wasps" I posted some time ago. An improved version would include the wasps down in front doing their "thing" alongside the eggs. Hey,it looks like you got your knees dirty on this one? And no stings either!!!

Nice POV. The details of the nest are very sharp. One can see the eggs and larvae inside nicely. I think th ecomposition would have been improved if one of the wasps had been in the field of focus. Nice shot. Thanx.

I hope you did not get any stings taking this. I echo the critiques that the front is beautiful and shorp, but it lacks a bit of DOF. Thanks for posting and I like the note

I find it interesting and instructive, ant the DOF makes the larvae the real subject of the photo this time. :)

Well, while I echo the previous comments about focusing on at least one wasp, I have to admit that the nest does make a genuinely interesting (and crisply sharp) subject, that also has a nice pattern quality to itself. Good color tones and contrast, and fine detail on the larvae. Thanks, Per.

I always found nests under my roof edge, but only vacant ones, never saw one with wasps..... never saw the eggs before, very good!

Jap, I like the way you chose to show us the nest and the eggs, as opposed to the wasps.
I like the details of the varying sizes of eggs. I've put it in the Nest theme. Thanks.

Very interesting motive and such an excellent photo, sharp and clear.
