We had a warm and sunny day here about a week ago when the first Honey Bees showed up in the garden. They were desperately looking for flowers and didn’t seem interested in the Snowdrops and so they went. Yesterday we had another lovely day and the bees returned and seemed very happy buzzing around the Crocuses that are now flowering. This was captured from a distance of ½ metre and has been cropped slightly and sharpened.

There is a large amount of information about bees on the web. The following basic information is from the site of Dept. of Entomology in Texas: -

ABOUT HONEY BEES
Did you know...

• Bees have 5 eyes
• Bees fly about 20 mph
• Bees are insects, so they have 6 legs
• Male bees in the hive are called drones
• Female bees in the hive
(except the queen)are called worker bees
• Losing its stinger will cause a bee to die
• Bees have been here around 30 million years!
• Bees carry pollen on their hind legs a pollen basket or corbicula
• An average beehive can hold around 50,000 bees
• Foragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey.
• The average forager makes about 1/12 th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
• Average per capita honey consumption in the US is 1.3 pounds.
• Bees have 2 pairs of wings.
• The principal form of communication among honey bees is through chemicals called pheromones.
• Bees are important because they pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the US including fruit, fiber, nut, and vegetable crops. Bee pollination adds approximately 14 billion dollars annually to improved crop yield and quality.

Hello Ulla,

Very beautiful composition. Very good POV and DOF. Excellent sharpness. Light and colours are superb. It seems that the bee is quite small compared to the size of the crocus.

Hello Ulla,
A picture full of spring-light. Something very simple, but touching. My grandfather used to have bees and he explained us kids how they make honey and learned us respect towards nature. Your picture brings all these memories back.
Thanks and a sunny day
Anne

Hi Ulla!

A very beautiful picture combined with a highly instructive note: that's what makes postings interesting!

The crocus and the bee are superb. Both also remind me what happens right now in my own garden: the arrival of spring!

Thank you for this!

Kind regards

Markus

You have that gentle, delicate touch which it seems is your signature in imagery. A fine short succinct lesson of the honey bee which is all important around the wolrld..without it we would surely starve...Very colourful and sharp!

Hi Ulla,

A wonderful "Welcome Sweet Springtime" shot. Even we don't have bees yet. The bee picked the perfect flower to pose on - the violet and orange are beautiful. Great details on the bee and a really nice picture.

Hi Ulla.
I have grown dumb for an instant with delight. Now I can already something say.
It is more than wonderful. It is more that outstanding. It is divinely. I love all ¬– subject (it is fantastic of beauty), DOF (its fantastic of wideness), details and sharpness (they are terrific), lights and of course, vibrant colours. My congratulations and thanks a lot.
Alexei.

Hej Ulla,
please remove this at once, the spring can't be in skåne already. ;-)) I'm envious ;-)
The picture is crisp and clear with beautiful colours.
Well composed with very good sharpness and fine details.
Well done.

Häruppe är det återgång till gråväder men det är ganska varmt,
och snödropparna har varit utslagna i en vecka nu, men inga insekter har synts till än.
Mvh
Gert

Hi Ulla,
Your picture reminds me of a similar shot I posted many days ago. But this shot is much better. Outstanding shot with immaculate sharpness and lovely colours. Very charming flower and the bee is having a fabulous time definitely. Superb use of natural lighting and perfectly exposed image. The DOF is great and isolates the subjects well from the darkish BG. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hi Ulla, I am very impressed with the detail you have picked up on this bee, and the flower it's on. The texture on both is extremely sharp (but not oversharpened). The colours too are very good. Excellent work.

Hi Ulla,
The best photo of a bee I never saw! Wolnderful colours, light and composition in every part of this beatiful imge.
TFS, José M.

Hello Ulla!
Another spring picture with another spring creatures. eautiful colours, sharpness and contrast (violet-orange mosaic is simply great!). And of course a bee! When the spring will come to Lodz??? :( Here it is all the time below +5C and I start to believe (especially after watching pictures from Sweden!) that there is some kind of "black hole" here in my region! ;) And more seriously: lovely presentation with very good note!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

PS. In 2-3 days I am going to the north-eastern part of Poland, maybe - because of shorter distance to Sweden - I will find a spring finally! ;)

Stunningly crisp, sharp, colourful and eye-catching macro of a bee on a flower, Ulla.
I love this composition. Got to add to my favourites.
You have done amazing work with your simple camera.
TFS anbd regards.
Ram

Absolutely beautiful ! Colors are spectacular and the clarity and sharpness superb. Extremely nice composition. I really like this one, well done !

TFS, Mish
