This Yellow-crowned Night Heron and its mate (not shown) nested near my workplace in spring last year. They built a nest on an oak tree along the road, on a branch that extended far out such that the nest was right above the road itself!
Here, I would see both birds in the morning, dozing off on one leg, tending to the nest, or walking over a few paces along the branch to stretch their legs a bit. Mostly they were still, almost in a meditative state, sometimes slowly opening their eyes and surveying the neighborhood.
The pair raised 3 chicks last season and it was really cool to have them right on my doorstep!
Yellow-crowned Night Herons, so called because of their prominent crowns, are fairly large birds (length ~ 2 feet, wingspan ~ more than 3 feet) with distinctive plumage. They are residents in the southeast US and have a breeding range covering most of the eastern US.
