California Condor

Despite having lived in southern Utah for many years, I had only seen a condor once before this year- feeding on a carcass with a bunch of ravens near Kanab several years back.

This year has been the year of the condor for us. Last summer we saw over 60 of the birds, along with vultures and ravens, soaring in the skies over Zion. We know they were condors and how many there were because there is usually a biologist nearby with a radio tracker more than willing to talk about the birds. We were even able to get a closeup look at a dozen or so birds roosting on some ledges near one of the gorges.

This bird was among six birds that we saw over the Grand Canyon on Friday. They were at least one canyon over when we first saw them. I changed from a wide angle lens to a telephoto on the off chance they might get close enough for a photo. Number seventy two was the only bird that wanted his picture taken. He flew over once and that was it.

Hi Allan

Great shot of number 72. A bit strange they have so visible numbers attached. Magnificant bird! Good work!

Thanks for sharing

Pekka

Allen,
Great shot of this condor, you have captured him well in full flight. I was in Utah once a few years ago and did see what I believe was a Golden Eagle. You are very fortunate to live in an area where such beautiful birds of prey live.
I have a partial albino Redtailed Hawk hanging around my neighborhood and I've only managed to get one decent photo of it so far.
Ron
