Finally for my 100th post and a year to the day on T.N, I have captured the Blue Faced Honey Eater;

I have posted a previous version, but really wanted to get something a little closer with more detail.

Unlike most of the birds that come in for a visit and are quite use to being photographed this little fellow simply didn’t hang around, as soon as I opened the sliding door to the back garden he took off.

So it was a case of sitting and waiting for several hours and finally it happened, and this is the result.

The Blue-faced Honeyeater is found in northern and eastern mainland Australia, from the Kimberley region, Western Australia to near Adelaide, South Australia, being more common in the north of its range. It is not found in central southern New South Wales or eastern Victoria. This species is also found in Papua New Guinea.

Considered sedentary in the north of its range, and locally nomadic in the south. Some regular seasonal movements observed in parts of New South Wales and southern Queensland.

The Blue-faced Honeyeater forms breeding pairs, and may sometimes be a cooperative breeder, where immature birds help the main breeding pair to feed nestlings. Most nests are made on the abandoned nests of Grey-crowned Babblers, Noisy, Silver-crowned and Little Friarbirds, Noisy Miner, Red Wattlebird, Australian Magpie, Magpie-Lark and, rarely, butcherbirds or the Chestnut-crowned Babbler.

Sometimes the nests are not modified, but often they are added to and relined. If a new nest is built, it is a neat round cup of rough bark, linked with finer bark and grass. Both the male and female tend the young birds, sometimes with the assistance of helpers. The fledglings remain with the parents for some time after fledging.

Details, Shot Raw converted to Jpeg cropped and sharpened; I have also run this though Neat Image to reduce the background noise prior to posting.

Hi Richard,

Congratulation with your 100th post!!!
Beautiful image of this lovely bird.
Wonderful colors and color contrast.
Sharpness and exposure are excellent.
Excellent note also.
Just would love to have seen a little more space at the right side of the frame in front of the birds bill.
A little to tight cropped in my opinion.
Nevertheless a very nice shot at wich it is a joy to look at.
TFS!!!

Best regards, Harry

Hi Richard.
very beautiful sharp image. Colors are great.
Perhaps a little more space on the right would have been nice. So taht you can see a bit more of the direction the bird looks at.

Congratulations, Rick, for your 100th post,

This is my first time seeing this honey eater,
and I can understand your passion for photographing it.
The blue face is really quite interesting and unusual.
Excellent focus, colors and DOF.
If possible, I would have left a bit more space in front of the bird.

Hi Rick,

Excellent composition, the colors of the bird and plants really work well together, a beautiful image. It may be me, but the only thing that looks just little less than optimal is the sharpness: it looks like you missed the focus by just a hair and over-sharpened a bit when you resized to compensate. I'm familiar with that look because I try it when I miss being right on the money with focus, happens more than I like to admit. :-)

Thanks,
John

Hi Richard
Your work is great. I love the colours.. the pale grey blurred background works well with the pinks and greens of the gum blossoms with the highlight of the intense blue of the honeyeater's face. To get this shot it was certainly worth the wait!

Hallo Richard
What a delightful and colourful image of this Blue Faced Honey Eater. This is a beautiful bird and you have captured it in a perfect close-up pose. The colour of the plumage is vivid and very bright and the details of the beak and eye are displayed well. I like the small blue patch around the eye, and the remarkable olive coloured backfeathers. The framing and composition are delightful. A pleasant image with great natural colours and light. The pink blossom the bird is sitting on is also pleasant to look at and adds a special touch to this beautiful image. Thank you very much for sharing. I enjoyed this one as it is new to me. Enjoy your day.
Kind regards
Anna
