Today we were back out to Freezeout Lake, Montana and we watched as the Snow Geese went out to feed in the farm fields in the area. Lotsof action as they don't sit still for a minute. The storm yesterday must have had them hunkered down, but this morning they were all hungry. The skies turned white on several occasion this morning, when their feeding was disturbed. After Lucy has a nap we'll be heading out in a different direction to see was Montana has for us.

Snow Goose
Chen caerulescensOrder: ANSERIFORMES Family: Geese and Ducks (Anatidae)

Codes: Common Name: SNGO Scientific Name: CHECAE ITIS Taxonomic No.: 175038
Overview
Snow Goose: Large goose with two color phases. White phase is all white with black wing tips. Blue phase has white head and neck, blue-gray upperparts, gray-brown breast and sides, white belly. Pink bill, black lower mandible. Pink legs, feet. Strong direct flight in bunched flocks or U formations.

Range and Habitat
Snow Goose: Breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and extreme eastern Siberia. In the west, spends winters on the Pacific coast from southern British Columbia south to Baja California; also mid-Atlantic coast and the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to Texas. Breeds on tundra; wintering habitats include salt marshes and marshy coastal bays and also freshwater marshes and adjacent grain fields.
Interesting Facts
During migration the Snow Goose flies so high it can barely be seen. They form shifting curved lines and arcs as they fly.

Hunters call these birds “Wavies.” The name in derived from the Chippewa name for this bird, wewe.

During the summer their heads’ are often stained red as a result of gathering food in mud containing iron oxides.

A group of geese has many collective nouns, including "a blizzard of geese", "chevron of geese", "knot of geese", "plump of geese", and a "string of geese."

Hello again Rick, I love this shot, the light is so bright and the snow geese all rowed up except the one at the foreground. We can see beautiful details in her feathers, I now know why they call them snow geese, they are so white, her back looks like snow! I like the framing of your picture and all the small cotton balls in the background, blurred and lively. Have a safe and good trip and enjoy the ride! I hope there's more to come. Bye bye,

Francine

Hi Rick,

Very good in flight capture.
Beautiful how you've managed to get this shot just before the goose was landing.
Love the background with all the familie of this goose already at dinner.
Excellent sharpness, note and exposure.
Wonderful clarity and details in the feathers of the goose wich is'nt easy due to all those whites.
Very well done. TFS!!!

Best regards, Harry

I like this shot Rick with the forward goose so sharp and frozen in action and all those out of focus geese in the background.

I'm curious where in Montana you are headed. You don't give a clue to us : )

Hi Rick,

Fantastic timing to get this goose just as he is ready to land. The details are wonderful - those wings are just marvelous. Perfect whites - the body really is like snow. Wonderful look on his face. Looks like he's being careful not to land on one of his friends.

Very good shot of this landing Goose!
Great detail in the feathers and superb sharpness.
The pose is great!
I love the DOF and how it shows the other geese in the BG but not so much that it distracts from the main subject.
Nice colours.
Well done Rick!

Hi Rick.
Muy hermosa la foto de hoy. Debe ser muy bello poder observar tantos Gansos Canadienses juntos buscando comida y refugio despues de un largo viaje.
Un saludo Rick.

Hi Rick.
Outstanding freezing of the scene and so amazing reproduction of white colour tones of the bird plumage. DOF and shutter speed are selected skillfully. BG, rich of content, is blurred exactly. Bravo.
Alexei.

Rick,
An awesome shot and a very nice note to go with it!
Extremely enchanting!
Cheers!
Goldy
