Bombina bombina - european fire-bellied toad
This species of fire-bellied toad is only present in low-altitude areas, climbing to about 300-400m.
Unlike Bombina variegata - yellow-bellied toad, the skin surface of this species is smoother, but still covered in spiny tubercules. As a general character for the genus Bombina, its skin is covered with poisonous glands. When a predator will try to eat a fire-bellied toad, it will turn with the belly facing up and show the bright aposematic coloration underneath. Usually, that is enough to discourage predators. If the animal tries to eat the toad, it will release the secretion from the poisonous glands which discourages predators. The only predator that will eat a fire-bellied toad is a grass snake (Natrix natrix) as it is resistant to the poison released by Bombina.
The fire-bellied toad can be found in all low-altitude water sources, both permanent and temporary (lakes, ponds, plashes, marshes). |

A beautiful portrait of a Bombina from a frontolateral viewpoint in sharp detail Tiberiu, the characteristic heart-shaped pupil is clearly visible within this fine composition. TFS indeed!
