Grey Heron
Scientific name: Ardea cinerea
Family:Ardeidae.
The grey heron is a native species of Europe, Asia and some parts of Africa. It can be 90 to 100 cm tall with a wingspan of of 175-195 cm and a weight of 1-2 Kg.
I took this picture in the Burger's zoo in Arnhem, The Netherlands. The heron was standing on a tree, looking confident and curious at the same time. He had probably became a regular visitor of the zoo, in the search of an easy meal.
This type of sighting is not uncommon in the Netherlands, provided that Grey Herons have in recent decades moved in great numbers into urban areas. |
