Rosie and I drove up to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park this afternoon and caught this doe out feeding. Just as I was about to take the shot she raised her tail and seemed to stand at attention for a pose.
There were about a dozen feeding in this small field next to a residential neighborhood. The park is located just south of Cleveland near the town of Independence Ohio.
In recent years the deer populations in the park have exploaded to the point at which much of the foliage and vegetation has been heavily damaged due to over browsing. This has caused many deer to feed on the plants and shrubbery of nearby landowners, especially in the winter and early spring months when natural browse is hard to find.
The ratio of deer per square mile is way over the carring capacity of the park, according to the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources. For the past couple of years the ODNR. has used sharpshooters to thin down the herd, which has caused a lot of controversy between them and animals rights groups.

Hello Ron,

Beautiful image of this lovely deer.
Love the way it seems to pose in open land in front of the forrest.
Wonderful color tones and clarity. The sharpness and depth of field is excellent.
Interresting note. It's always hard to find a way and there always will be contraversy between landowners and animal right groups.
Very well done. TFS!!!

Best regards and have a nice Sunday, Harry

Hi Ron,

Very nice shot, caught her in a good pose too.

We have WAY too many deer here too. A few days back, I posted a photo of an early, yellow Crocus in my yard, and a few days after that, I had about 4 dozen of them in bloom, along with a dozen purple ones, and was planning on photographing them en masse, but the deer visited one night and ate them ALL.

I live in a spot almost surrounded by county forest preserves, and the deer here are so dense that they are a destructive force. The oak woods nearby now have NO Trillium left, the deer have eaten them all, and there's a visible browse line, the deer eat everything. As you mentioned, when they bring in the sharpshooters, there's a very vocal legion of deer lovers who don't know anything about ecology or nature really, they just like deer, and they start screaming their heads off, so the county backs off on killing the deer. It's a BIG mess.

Sorry for going off on a tangent, deer push my buttons.

John

Hi Ron,

A beautiful deer in a wonderful pose. The raised tail is fantastic -- your title is perfect. Wonderful details of the face, coat, and tail. The colors are superb - I love the setting and the way the deer's colors are picked up in the reeds.

Jane

Wow..Talk about depth of field control...This is absolutely perfect for the shot. My problem is too shallow of DOF...you had it all right there..Very good capture...
