Spur Winged Plover
Vanellus miles novae-hollandiae

A very common sight in fields of on large areas of bare land or root crops, the Spur Winged Plover walks in an upright fashion but occasionally breaks into a tip toeing run.
The spur on its wing is usually hidden, as it is in this shot.
I took this hand held using 12x digital zoom.
The bird was on a grass traffic-island,surrounded on all sides by roads and vehicles.

Hi Steve, very good shot of this Plover. We call it a Masked Lapwing in Australia. You've picked up good detail in the plumage, with great light and colour on the bird.

Thanks, John

Hello Steve,

Very nice image of this Plover wich might be common in the area you live, but for me a very uncommon bird wich I never have seen in real before.
Excellent sharpness and exposure wich did result in wonderful feather details, wich is'nt easy with al those whites, and contrast.
Very well done. TFS!!!

Best regards, Harry

Nice shot Steve,
Good to see a post from you again, hope you are well.
Guess I've been missing your recent posts..
Cool bird :)

Yes, nice shot. The carpal spur is a feature of all Vanellus species, so this name (also applied to other Vanellus outside of Australia) is usually no longer used.

Hello Steve
where were you my friend. Recently, I didnt see your nice shots from New Zeland. You came back with a great shot of this very beautiful and pretty Plover. Welcome again. It is very similar to our Vanellus species, but except for yellow dermic extension. Another thing "Spur Winged Plover" use for this species, but usually it refers to V. spinosus. "Masked Lapwing" may be prefered for this species.
best wishes from Turkiye
