Greater Periwinkle. Vinca major. Member of the Periwinkle family, Apocynaceae.

The "Lesser" and "Intermediate" Periwinkles are very similar, but usually distinguishable by size and leaf width, the greater Periwinkle being the largest and relatively brightest of the three.

This is an evergreen "undershrub" the flowers carried on long trailing stems. They are 5 petalled. purplish blue, and up to 30-50mm across. The flowering season can be from January to June, quite long lasting, but the flowers themselves sometimes only survive for a short time before wilt, droop etc takes over.

They are possibly native to S England, and are usually found near gardens, hedge banks and woods. They also prefer calcareous soils and will favour scrub land.

The leaves are "lanceolate", quite leathery and carry a shine throughout the year.

They can also propagate through nodes at leaf and stem junctions, thus enabling a large ground cover to be produced.

I took a series of these periwinkles today, buds as well as open flowers, but did struggle to get a decent composition from them. Don't quite know if it was light, flash or camera settings, or me having an "off day" but they have not come out as I hoped.

Some were taken with natural light and this with flash, but to me at least, they all look a bit flat...I will therefore return asap to try to get what I am looking for in this plant, it just does not "jump" out!!

Manual focus, tripod, remote shutter and mirror lock used.Shot in RAW.

shutter speed 1/250

Hi Howard. I think we end up looking for to much some times. This is a good picture of the Periwinkle . I woul be pleased to get this one. you have good rich colours and fine deatil. well done TFS.
Nick..

Howard

A fine shot, the swirl of the petals seems to draw me into its centre. I like the lighting levels that you seem to achieve with your shots, are they taken at the same time of day? Whatever your secret it works for me.

Hola Howard,
original los pétalos de la vinca,
buenos colores y pov...
excelente foco,
saludos

One more wonderful addition for my blue theme...it is and always has been as far back as I remember my favorite colour. And if it is an evergreen it probably grows here as well..being the Evergreen State as we like to call ourselves...Good show Howard...Have you ever heard of the pigeons? has anyone?
Bob

This is a superb macro Howard!
The sharpness, POV and colours are excellent in this close-up of Greater Periwinkle flower, species that does not tolerate the Swedish climate at present. We only have the Lesser.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Regards, Ivan
