BLOOD LILY,
APRIL FOOL or MARCH LILY,
HAEMANTHUS COCCINEU

The Blood Lily flower heads are like bright shaving brushes popping up from underground bulbs. They emerge from the bulbs that have lain dormant during summer. Then between February and April in NZ, the flowers grow, one to each plant, and bloom and die off before the leaves appear. The flower head comprises 6-9 stiff, red spathe valves surrounding the 25-100 coral to scarlet flowers. The valves are mostly fleshy and may stand erect or sometimes be somewhat lax.

The leaves are smooth and fleshy, and semi-erect. They are 2 ugly tongue-like leaves that seem to grow and grow, and then rot away and disappear. They die down from about October in the Southern Hemisphere and once again in February they appear again.

The generic name HAEMANTHUS is derived from the Greek word HAIMA for blood, and ANTHOS for colour of the flower. COCCINEUS is the Latin word for red or scarlet.

I have posted the original in Workshop.
