| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| This photograph was taken in Hervey Bay, Queensland, the jump-off point to Frasier Island. My girlfriend and I were walking down the pier and we saw one of these small fish (I believe they are a type of puffer fish) in the water surrounding a pillar of the pier. We assumed that it had gotten trapped as the tide had receded, but as we continued down the dock, we began to notice that there were fish surrounding every pillar. Once the tide had fully receded, these small crabs emerged from the sand and traveled to the small pools of water. As they approached, the fish jumped from the pools and captured the crabs. It was a very interesting behavior. |

Hello Matthew,
I'd agree, very interesting behaviour and fairly risky for both the fish and the crabs I'd guess. Great image of the goings-on, good diagonal composition to include the army of crabs and the waiting fish, great detail and exposure. An interesting post and quality image, thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Matthew, this is a shot in Natural History. With this shot you are showing some characteristics found with these Puffers that I, and I expect many others were unaware of. I of course knew about the fish, and those crabs but the relationship, and the fishes behaviour feeding on the crabs in this manner is very interesting. I learned something with this post today. The shot is a good one too, in a documentary sense, showing the top down view of both the fish and these crabs.
Thanks, John

I like that picture, it is very pictural and the contrast between the fishes and the small crabs is interesting. Reading your notes make it even more interesting and captivating. What a fantastic phenomena to watch. I like the long shadows and the tiny blue colour of the crabs. Thank you!
