[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello,

I took this shot of this cute little dunnock the same time as when I took the blackbird! It came as close as the blackbirdb aswell.

If you could critique it then please do and hope you like it!

Danny

Hello Danny,

Welcome to TN. A nice image you have of this Dunnock, good focus on the bird and some good detail. I think the composition needs a little work, he looks a little lost right over to the side of the frame with all the grass. Ask Joey to tell you about the rule of thirds (most important thing to note though is that it's a guideline, not a rule!). The focal point of the image, the area our eyes are drawn to first, is usually the eye if it's an animal or bird portrait, so try placing the eye on one of the thirds lines and see if it looks right. If it doesn't you can move it, as I said it's just a guideline. I think for this image, there is too much space to the left of the bird and above it.

Don't be discouraged by the lack of critiques, people here at TN generally have to like an image before they will leave critiques or comments. Looking at your previous image (your first post) you obviously have some talent and an aptitude towards this kind of photography, so just keep shooting, keep posting and keep learning, I think you're showing a lot of potential.

Kind regards,
Adrian

Hi Danny

Mmmmmm, birdie num-num… Another nice sharp capture of a lovely bird and that lively eye is pure magic. The bright green grass worked well as a BG thereby isolating the bird so there is nothing else to distract the eye. The exposure is fine, although slightly from the side thereby leaving the one side of the bird slightly on the darkish side, but there is still sufficient detail visible. As far as the composition goes, I think Adrian has said enough. He's a wise man and a cool hand with a camera so I would advice you to take good notice of what he suggested. Go and have a look at his portfolio, especially his leopard and raptor shots, you will definitely wish that one day you want to be able to take photos of that standard.

Anyway, enjoy your camera and photography and I am looking forward to see the next episode.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
