This is a male Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica).

It was recently known as Marmora’s Warbler (Sylvia sarda), found on the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and smaller islands. However, as the Balearic individuals are smaller and are genetically different it has been given separate species status.

This is the first time this endemic species has been shown on TN.

Early in the morning I took a 2 km walk up Bocquer Valley in the very NW of Mallorca, known for this warbler. Just before the valley dips down into the sea, I saw a small grey bird singing in the morning sun on a low bush. It was my first sighting of this exclusive bird but it disappeared on seeing me!

I sat on my portable stool waiting for it to reappear, which it did, but behind me. This time he was against the light while I was in full sight in the sun for him to check me out. I took a few shots at a distance of about 8 meters and this is one that I chose to post.

This image shows the tail in the typical upright position but it seems to be lowered when it is singing, as shown in the WORKSHOP.

The Balearic warbler has a typical chattery Sylvia song but it is a little softer and more musical than other related Sylvia warblers like the Dartford and Marmora’s. It nests in low dense macchia bushes generally within sight of the sea

After fairly heavy cropping and size reduction I had to reduce the shade and sharpen a little.

Hi Ivan

This is a superb shot - all aspects of it are spot on - detail, isolation, eye contact, framing . . .

I particularly like the light on the leg.

Hi Ivan,
That a beauty and of course a new one for all us, thanks to your patient wait:)
Despite the little one being against the light, you managed to get a superb shot with beautiful details in the frame. The grey BG with the slight green tint accentuates the colour of the bird and the red on the ringed eye , beak and its legs present a nice contrast. The sunlight falling from the other side makes its beak and legs an interesting translucent red.
TFS & Cheers

Very incredible detail picked up on this Warbler Ivan, especially that eye. I've never seen anything like that. The pose he has given you is a good one, and you've made good use of it positioning him in the frame like this. I like the workshop as well, not sure which I would have posted, they're both great. Very nice work on the PP, and very good notes.

Thanks, John

Great composition.

Fine captures of the Balearic Warbler, both of them Ivan, the characteristic posture and the slightly different singing stance are really textbook macros and good information providers for the biology of this small beauty, thank you for sharing your captures with us, my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Beautiful bird. Nice capture as usual.

Starting out in thumbnail I almost saw the formation of the letter V....in composition it drew in my eye immediately. then in larger format we have a very sharp and very gray white bird so clear and yet distinctly popping out of a blue gray background (appearance to my eye) with ease. As well as you do and of course your added notes are superb. Glad to have you back I say once more, from your short trek.
Bob

Hello Ivan,
How cute this Balearic Warbler is. And the fact that the light comes from behind, gives to the picture a very pleasant apearance. Thanks also for the note and to present an endemic species which has never been shown on TN.

Hi Ivan

Nice to see you have some nice weather there and that subjects for shooting are always available :)
This great male Balearic Warbler you captured looks lovely - especially in this back-light here. Very nice sharp details and beautiful work with the exposure - even though you had to reduce the shade a bit to get more texture, i think this is still a great effort and shot.
Well done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Nice to see really first result from your Spanish trip. I was looking forward to see shots of this trip. Birds of the genus Sylvia are very beautiful. Today, I also capture S. curruca. Balaearic species similar to it, except red eye-ring instead of white ring of S. curruca. Your capture excellent with POV, composition and splendid coloration. BG and eye contact also great. Muchas gracias y saludos amigo

Hi Ivan,
Outstanding shot of this cute little Warbler with such lovely colours and details on its plumage. The back lighting makes the image dramatic with red eye and bill standing out nicely. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.

Hello Ivan,
Great work here Ivan, I like the backlighting very much and you still got great detail of this species. I find the eye quite unique. Splendid job sir.

Hi Ivan

Well done on getting this little guy, the smaller ones are always hard to get. Good shot against the light. The way it sits with cocked tail reminds me of our female fairy-wrens. Good sharpness and comosition as always.
