Common Crow on Currly Leaf Flowers

Hi,

Well, for many here, a 1000 in TN would have come quick since their joining. But I have huffed and puffed to this mark as I have been working on some studies and been quite irregular a member.

All the same I can’t but resist coming in here even for a couple of days and looking at all your lovely posts. I started with a HP Pocket PC cam, then a Sony Handycam and now Canon SX100…and I hope to grow out of this one too …It’s has been fun to learn out here ..Thanks everyone :)

Today I have for you one of the most Common butterflies of India sitting atop the fragrant white flowers of a Curry leaf tree (you can see the leaves in the background). I couldn’t use the macro function as the flowers were way above my head and I had to raise my hands above my shoulders to get the shots. Among 6-7 shots, this was the best I could manage. The morning sunlight was a wee bit harsh and the white flowers also have had some problem in exposure. But I hope you like the effort :)

The Common Crow (Euploea core) is a glossy black butterfly found in South Asia. In India it is also sometimes referred to as the Common Indian Crow.

It has brown underside with white marks along the outer margins of the wing. The wingspan is about 8-9 cm and the body also has prominent white spots. It belongs to the Crows and Tigers subfamily of the Nymphalidae (Brushfooted butterflies).

The butterfly, being protected by its inedibility, has a leisurely flight. It is often seen flying about shrubs and bushes in search of its host plants. It visits a large variety of flowering plant species. It has tough, leathery wings. When attacked it shams death and oozes liquid which causes any predators to release them.

The Curry Tree or Curry-leaf Tree (Murraya koenigii; syn. Bergera koenigii, Chalcas koenigii) is a tropical to sub-tropical tree in the family Rutaceae, which is native to India and Sri Lanka. The species name commemorates the botanist Johann Gerhard Koenig.

It is a small tree, growing 4-6 m tall, with a trunk up to 40 cm diameter. The tree requires need warm temperatures with full sun to partial shade. Blooming time is late spring to early summer.

The flowers are small white, and fragrant and are 5/16 of an inch across and are sweetly scented. The small black, shiny berries are edible, but their seeds are poisonous.

The leaves are pinnate, with 11-21 leaflets, each leaflet 2-4 cm long and 1-2 cm broad. The pungent aromatic leaves of the tree are commonly used as seasoning in Indian and Sri Lankan cooking.

You have shot a wonderful picture of a Common Crow from a very good point of view. The iamge is sharp and clear with the entire subject in perect focus. The details on the wings are exquisite.

Great capture in fine sharpness of both the Common Crow butterfly and the Indian Curry Tree flowers that it is on. Both are also well set off by the OOF curry leaf BG in a fine composition.

Good composition and I like the POV, perhaps a bit tight up top.
Nice detail and DOF on the B-fly, the white flowers are slightly over-exposed though..Hard to expose a dark b-fly and the white flowers together.

Hi Shilpa,

Plain crow [which I am seeing for the first time] looks similar to the plain tiger which is most abundant amongst the butterflies. Not onlu the body but also the patterns only situated marginally. Nice smeared BG. Well managed contrast in the FG. Thanks for the vivid image.
