This was about as close as I have been to a squirrel since I was in single digits. There may be more of a bond between animals and children than adults. Perhaps the more we think we learn, the less we know. My sons' fist words were not daddy or mommy. They were "Water is God's Medicine." Really!? Yes...A whole sentence was his first "word". This was our youngest of 7 back in 1989. David, his name, was as me back then. In the wilderness he would wander off and the whole family would have to search a perimeter in almost panic, but he was simply hiding nearby the cabin, playing with a rabbit.

Perhaps there is an analogous growth as we get older. Our cares and worries are something we learn to live with...and so we usually do not extend a range of fear from inside. All of a sudden I have noticed that small animals and even birds come closer. I'm sure the whole thing is quite philosophical with a dash of science, but I enjoy the returned doesn't to the natural world, hence the ability to catch this shot of a Gray/Grey squirrel close in.

Grey Squirrel

Key Features: Tail has white edge like a halo. No ear tufts.
Coat: Predominantly grey. Very often tinged orange/red/brown along the body (particularly the back) and on the face.
Size: 25-27 cm body length. Stocky build. Weighs around 400 - 600g.
Behaviour: Quite bold and tenacious, frequently seen on the ground as well as in trees. Can be seen a distance from tree cover, in open ground.

Maybe the high ISO made the use of a tripod at 4000th sec a little like cracking a nut with a sledge hammer, but the result is great, Bob.
The sharpness, POV, and lighting contribute to make this an excellent close portrait of an American grey Squirrel. Must have been used to you like ours are to us at home.

Hi Bob , wonderfully detailed photograph of this grey squirrel , color and composition very nice too. bit surprised to read your listed exif data , particularly the ISO , you have surprisingly little grain for it. nice work.

Hello Bob,
Excellent details in this little fellow!
The extreme close-up really brings out the details, I can almost touch the fur coat...
Come to think of how rare it is to see squirrels that are not eating, hehehe!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Bob,
What a lovely close capture of this Squirrel munching away! I like the light and the sharp details. We have two Red Squirrels coming to our bird table every day now and they stay for ages! They seem ever so hungry at the moment - maybe there are young ones up the Pine trees somewhere - the mother certainly looks very worn! I hope the Crows don't get them!
TFS and regards, Ulla

A lovely note, Bob...And a lovely shot, too...

Hi Bob,

Wow!! Great close-up of this squirrel. This is something way different from you. Just the right timing to catch him with his paws to his mouth and munching away. Details are fantastic - the eye, fur, ears, and those wonderful whiskers are razor sharp. Excellent natural colors and great textures of his coat. Would you believe there are no squirrels here - I've seen a few ground squirrels and that's it.

Jane

Hello Bob, cute squirel:) TFS. Regards,

Hello Bob. Very interesting story of your child. Amazing long and difficult first sentence. The squirrel is super sharp here in good exposure and lighting. I like the pose too and well done. Regards. Jusni

Hello Bob
Cute would be the word here that springs to mind...Its a superb capture at such a close range...Dof is spot on and the iso 1600 you used has worked very well due to the light I guess giving a great sharpness that doesnt need any pp work to sharpen it up a bit..I think you get most noise at High ISO,s when you try and add a little extra in the PP department...Great capture.

Hello Bob,
Wonderful image, wonderful note and wonderful insight. I love it when an animal will allow you inside its comfort zone. It shows amazing trust on their part, and I for one believe they can sense when we are kind and non treatening. Great job my friend.
Rick

Bob, this is the best ever Squirrel close-up picture I have seen on TN.
Look how you have captured a bit of the sky in its almsot liquid eye!
The head has an almost 3D appearance, mainly because you took the picture with the sun coming from behind the subject. That shadow of the ear on the forehead does it.
Fantastic portrait of this cute creature.
Thanks and take care, my friend.

Hi Bob, lovely pose for this cute creature, splendid details and great sharpness, wonderful light and good colors, BRAVO! very well done, ciao Silvio

Beautiful photograph. Though normally having the front of the squirrel's head in shadow would be considered "wrong" photographically speaking, it works exceptionally well in this fine composition. Great lighting angle. Lighting, technical quality and composition are exceptional!

I think these small creatures understand that you can't move so fast now Bob!! Sorry, I couldn't resist that!

But maybe it is your gentle face and soft heart now. It is a super close-up of this squirrel - I'd love to see one - she's quite pretty.

Good shot

Well dear Bob, David the little one who rattled off a line for his first words must have also been quite a prankster giving you enough moments of panic. As little children we do not know what fear is until events unfold and they begin casting shadows and shades in our minds installing fear in its own shady hues. And "unless one knows not fear everything can be dear and near":)

A superb capture of this squirrel- what an intimate portrait this has turned out to be. Yes, they have this tendency to come close by and we wonder , maybe this one didnot know "the fear". I love this PoV and the superb backlighting and its superb pose.Very well done.
TFS & Cheers

Hi Bob,

A good close-up photo of the grey squirrel eating a nut. The point of view is showing with precision the details and colors of the animal. The light has a good effect on the scenery. Have a nice day.
