[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi folks , this morning I wandered over to a local pond and discovered that the blackbirds had arrived. , the yellow headed black bird and red winged black bird are both quite common, though in large rural areas they can be harder to find due to loss of habitat. this photo displays it in it's preferred habitat, they like marshy areas with cattail reeds. their feeding is mostly seeds and insects. they nest low in the cattails using the reeds materials for building. of the places I frequent in town , there are two locations that have an abundance of cattail reeds , this one , and another located at a beaver pond in the woods , I have never seen a single blackbird at the one in the woods , but here there are many , the difference being the close presence of farm land. the black bird is considered a pest by farmers , as they flock feed on the grain affecting the farmers harvest. though an abundant bird , I have read that their numbers are showing decline due to poisoning. the use of poison to control plants and animals is a reality that I find both sad , and frightening.

this photo was taken just after sunrise , I had a bit of trouble with back lighting and just getting a workable shutter speed. I attempted using the flash on this one , I seldom do that with birds/mammals preferring not to frighten them. he did not seem to even notice , I am not really sure the flash made any difference , I need to read up on its effective distance.

Regards

Hi Art, not an easy shot to take, I think you have done well to get this bird with such good colours, the lighting is always a problem early/late days. Perhaps try a bigger ISO than 200, I have used up to 800 without causing too much graininess, but 400 should not be too much of a problem. good image though and TFS

Art, I think you did an excellent job. The light conditions were challenging with brigt backlighting on a dark subject. That's exactly what I would habve done... tried the flash. Beautiful bird.

Hi Art,
you have done reasonably well for the backlight problem but the thing that mars your photo some are the ghost reeds just in the way and not focused on and I know what it is like to try to get a clear line of sight on a subject and not notice what gets in the way.The use of flash probably has helped some, however what it can do to an animal's eyes is something that is not always great,as I have shot owls with flash, only to have the most dramatic looking red eyes ever. This bird has white/ blue eyes as a result and that is common with most birds unfortunately. The colour and details are good for Mr. Yellowhead and thanks for giving us this view. Bob
