Hi Tom,
this is a very well detailed shot of the sparrow and like yourself,I too have a terrible time trying to identify what species they are as well. The focus is sharp and the colour is good too if somewhat flat. The thing about this photo is it does show sparrows are not so plain looking if one takes the time to really look at them as you have and for that I thank you for giving us this view. Danged if it ain't...I see these so many times a day but from my perspective...you image is quite clear and nice..In mine I tend to futz with things...and get the backdrops out of some such. Here you have a pure and total mug shot...Tres' cool my bud on the west side...

Hi Tom
My guess would be a Vesper Sparrow. Check out this link, it has their call as well.

What ever bird you captured here he sure has interesting markings. The detail is sharp and colours are wonderful.

Hi Tom
Great clear shot against a lovely BG. I would have left just a wee bit more space beside the tail. For me it is cropped just a tad too close. :-)

Nice close shot Tom. I think it might be called a Swamp Sparrow. Not sure though. It's the closest one I can find in my book. Their plumage varies a bit depending on the season. TFS Trevor
