The Hummingbirds have arrived to North East Ohio. It was raining out but this little guy stopped by for a short visit. I ran for my camera and quickly got this shot off before he headed for dryer ground.
We have a lot of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds visit our backyard throughout the summer months. Their high pitched tweeting is a tell tale sign that they are perched in one of our trees, so the search begins. We normally don't have more then three come to our feeder at one time ,and even this is a large number to see all at once. I have seen videos on you tube where there will be up to a dozen or more visiting a feeder together, but that doesn't happen at our house.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird to live in the eastern half of the United States. No one knows for sure why this is but there are speculations that milder climates along the western coast brings about more varieties of flowers that the hummingbirds favor.
The males are usually the first to arrive to the breeding areas and establish their own territories that they strongly defend.
The tiny nest which is made up of plant down, lichens and bud scales is usually placed in conifers or deciduous trees.
Two eggs are laid with an incubation period of about 16 days. The young remain in the nest from 14 to as high as 31 days. This is much higher then any other hummingbirds nesting stage. Two broods in the same season are not uncommon in warmer climates.

Very nice image - a little noisy, but that could be the close crop. There's no doubt as to the colors which held beautifully or the bird species. I really enjoy the POV - not to mention the subject. Excellent notes by the way.

Hi Ron,
this photo may have some noise in it but it really is a good one to include here on TN as the colour and details are really very good.Iso 800 will often give graininess but that is to be expected.I have tried a workshop on this lovely little bird to see what Paint.Net can do with it and I hope you find it to be of interest.Paint.Net is a free to download photo editor with a great range of tools however it only works on Vista and Xp computers. Thanks for not pulling this photo,I like it. Bob

Hello Ron,

Very beautiful Hummer, the bird has very nice colors.
Great close up and excellent POV, you also composed it
very well.. Well done

Hi ROn,

Excellent image, what a beauty! Excellent pose, and sharpness.

A bit of fine noise in the background, but I used to shoot film, looks like film grain, doesn't particularly bother me. I think people who are new to photography since the advent of digital are a bit more sensitive to that than film-converts are.

Really nice image!

John

Hi Ron,
Nice closeup of this Ruby Throated Hummer, the red gorget looks very nice. Good POV, pose, and details, and those little drops of water on its head add somethin' special :)
