Ramsons... great name for a plant!! very butch and direct... I digress, Ramsons, Allium ursinum, Member of the Lily family and Britain's Commonest and only native broadleaved garlic. Vigour is the name for this plant, very vigorous, capable of carpeting large areas of ground.

Short, about 45 cm tall at best, but with striking white flowers, star shaped and very well defined. The flowers are about 12-20mm across, forming broad "umbrells" on leafless stems. The leaves are broad and ribbed, very nice shade of green, lanceoloate and "crisp" The leaves can look similar to "lady's of the Valley, but brighter green. They also hold their scent. These fine plants are found in woodlands (damp) shady banks and occasionally in the open.

Initially, the flowers are covered with a papery bracts, but these soon fall away, revealing the 6 stamens and "superior" ovary.

The strong smelling and odorous oils in the plant, may be more to do with protecting itself from herbivores, but some sub-species and cultivated varieties have been used by man for generations as both vegetable and spice.

This little cluster was thriving under a Blackthorne hedge. I decided to take this image on the way home (from Golf) bright sunshine elsewhere, but in shadow here. I used diffused flash fill directed from the right hand side. I was after a contrast between different florets, ie, one head on and one side on, but both to show stamens and ovaries.

This image was shot in RAW (as always) manual focus, tripod, mirror lock and remote shutter used.

This image is "as is".......NO PP at all done to it, no cropping or sharpening, just sized for upload.

ISO 200
Shutter speed 1/320
F-Stop f/29

The ISO was opened up a bit to get a bit more light to the sensor, but without causing any grain. Shutter speed of 1/320 is the limit my ancient Chinon flash gun will operate before having an asthma attack!!

You must be the ultimate romantic outside of Luciano there in Italy or perhaps Silvio who wishes:-))) Very nice Howard...Your flowers are always well appreciated by me at least..and I do so love white. It is neutral and can denote many things!

Hi Howard,
Beautiful white flowers. Sharp macro with perfect exposure. Cropping, though, is a bit tight.

Hello Howard,
Great close of the flowers of Ramsons with excellent sharpness and light management, the use of flash helping to show them up without over-exposure.
Ramsons are common in wooded areas with basic soils in S. Sweden too. Have you tried a cheese sandwich with a ramsons leaf in it.
It's delicious!
TFS this fine image,
Have a great weekend,
Ivan
