Ophrys biscutella
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Ophrys biscutella belongs to he Ophrys argolica group.
It is endemic to the Gargano region
Etymology: biscutella with 2 shields (a reference to the shape of the speculum)
We saw numerous biscutellas with a range of different coloured sepals and patterns on the lip. This in my opinion is a really striking orchid.
Flowers: 10-50cm tall with 2-8 flowers, sepals white to dark violet-purple spreading then strongly turned back.
Flowering season: April – May
Habitat: Full sun to mid-shade on dry to moist, mostly alkaline subtrates .Short grassland, garrigue, scrub or open woodland up to 1300m. |
