Taken just north of Silverton, Colorado. Looking at Bear Mountain at 13,000 feet (3975 meters). Taken from highway 550 also known as the Million Dollar Highway, and let me tell you the scenery along this highway is worth a million dollars ;-)

This around Silverton and Ouray is in the heart of Colorado's mighty San Juan Mountains, the closest thing you can get to the Alps in North America, with the high elevations, (there are 5 peaks over 4000 meters in elevation and 3 more at over 3900 meters in elevation immediately surrounding the town of Silverton, a total of over 100 peaks above 4000 meter in the greater San Juan's, Colorado's second largest mountain range) steep slopes, rugged terrain and ragged ridgelines and spiney spires for summits of many of the peaks in the area. The aptly named Needle Mountains (a fault block mountain range made up of several 13,800 or 4200 meter to 14,200 foot 4340 meter peaks) are a mere 6 miles south of the town of Silverton and just east of Molas Pass on highway 550.

This photo was taken south of Red Mountain Pass, a high mountain pass about 10500 feet 3211 meter, that separates Silverton from Ouray to the north.

Nice one Paul! A million dollars? Thats it? I thought it was so good it was priceless! The best things in life are free! Anyways very nice color, but I did notice that the saturation on that peak is a little high.... is this due to your camera or did it acually look like this? Anyways great job! Thanks Paul for sharing! Cheers Josh Lewis.

This is priceless, Paul!
And I don't mean the place, but the shot as well!
this is a very different perspective than the run-of-the-mill shots with snow peaks...
Very well done!
Cheers!
Goldy

Hello paul!
very nice landscape.

Hi Paul,
You've had very difficult light conditions with really big lightness difference, but I think You made the test! The result's great, not the best ever I've seen, but counting there were bright sunny and dark shady parts, quite an excellent image. Worth a million bucks or not, the place - or Your photo - really is having atmosphere. Tfs.
Best wishes, László

Hi Paul,
a marvellous scenery, the early morning touching the peaks above the icy cold valley shadows. An incredible view into unspoilt nature from a highway.
With richly detailed landscapes, the data compression down to web presentation is always a bit tricky. At this forum, I'd recommend to make full use of the allowed maximum 800 pixels sidelength - and, good news for all of us who love well resolved details, the maximum data upload per picture to this site has been increased from 200kB to 300kB, recently.
Thank you! My best regards,
Peter

Hello Paul,
a magnificent shot of this snowy mountain. I did not have the luxury to enjoy such, but your shot help to to appreciate it very much. Rivers meandering, scattered pines, shadow management and most of all the peak. Such a well composed shot and pov.
Regards,
Foozi

hello Paul

wonderful landscape image of the Silverton, with fine POV,
and the vertical framing gives a very fine DOF, i love the effect
that the ground of the foreground is in the shadow and
the moutains of the background are in the highlights, TFS

Hi Paul

A very beautiful shot of this scene!
I really like your moment here, capturing the alpen-glow so well and therefore giving the picture such a superb mood.
The colors are gorgeous (but just perhaps a bit oversaturated) and the depth of the image is terrific - keeping excellent sharpness from the FG all the way to the farthest mountain.
Very good vertical composition and well balanced exposure as well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia
