Hi All,
Todays posting is a Gray Jay that was captured at Cameron Lake at the same time as the stellar jay. These little jays are not as bold as the stellars but still come to get a hand out of seeds.

Gray Jay
Perisoreus canadensis
General Description

By Nora Bryan

The gray jay is widespread in the mountains, foothills and boreal forests of Alberta. In winter this crestless jay might be seen in the parkland and in forested areas near cities, especially in years when food resources are scarce.

The bold gray jay is at home in dense spruce and mixed coniferous forests. This intelligent, opportunistic bird has learned that picnickers pack goodies, and is commonly observed looking for handouts or scraps at picnic sites and campgrounds in its range. It is not afraid to help itself if handouts are not forthcoming ? hence its other name "Camp Robber:".

When not wheedling whatever it can from people, gray jays feeding habits are like those of other corvids, taking seeds, fruit, insects, and occasionally the eggs and nestlings of other birds. They might also be seen at roadkills. The gray jay has special sticky saliva that it uses to stick together balls of berries, which are then glued to tree branches for future eating.

The nest, usually in a conifer, is constructed of twigs, bark and moss and lined with fur and feathers. Two to six eggs are incubated for 16 to 18 days and young are fledged 15 days after hatching.

Hi Rick

What a powerfully simple shot, the colours are unserstated yet warmimg to the eye. Well handled with so many pale shades.

Jai

Very fine capture of this Jay, Rick.
I see you still have plenty ice there. Could you send me some to make myself a cool drink in the sweltering heat of India? :-)
This bird is so cute and pretty and you have captured it in a happy mood.
TFS and regards.

Tres' cute Rick. I see some familiar looking white 'stuff' 'round his feet. Makes for an anticipatory image. I feel as though I should be there on the almost tundra appearance, with a bag of seeds to throw at him. Cold images make me hungry...hmm...Very nice.Super nice at 400ISO. Must have been a lousy or cold day eh? Hmmm...Nice how the feathers came out so sharp never the less..
Bob

Hi Rick,

You just love your subjects to be standing in snow!! An adorable little Grey Jay who allowed you such an up-close shot. He probably wanted you to warm him up under your jacket. I love the way he is looking up at you. Lovely natural colors and excellent details of his face, wings and plummage.

Jane

Hello Rick,
I was thinking: "A Jay?".

A very beautiful bird and you photographed it with a lot of detail...

Rick,

May 22nd and you still have snow in your shots?! I think I've had enough snow for this season....
That's a cool capture (with a double meaning I suppose) The pose you caught here is one of anticipation - it looks like he is waiting for some seeds :) Very nicely captured Rick. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hello Rick,
A beautiful portrait of a Gray (Canada) Jay standing in the snow. The sharpness and gentle contrast with the spring snow is superb and the POV, though not low, is very attractive in this composition.
I can see the resemblances to its relative the Siberian Jay, found in northern sweden and the behaviour is similar.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Oh, my just how cute is this little jay. I love that expression on its face. Birds do have expression don't they. This one does. Great sharpness and details. Simply lovely. I just want to touch it gently and feel the feather. Wow! that shot! Thanks Rick, Always.

Hallo Rick
When I looked at this photo, a strange feeling came over me, which I cannot really describe. This little bird just touched my heart. I have seen many beautiful birds on the site and also in your gallery, but this one had a special effect on me. Still I do not know why. It has a very innocent look on its face. I love the fluffy feathers around the face. A delicate and handsome bird. I was really intrigued by this image. Excellent focus, well framed and sharp details. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Bellissimo ritratto di questo uccellino, ottimo POV dall'alto per una composizione che accentua gli aspetti di tenerezza, eccellenti nitidezza e definizione del piumaggio, molto bello lo sfondo di questa ultima neve "grigia". Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hy Rick
I just read that this cute little bird belongs to Corvide family.I can not believe.Of course, it is right. In my eyes, it locks like a long-tailed tit, than a jay! But anyway, the picture is very good, very sharp.
Regards, Oana
