Black Beauty
Last weekend I saw the double-crested cormorant group enjoying the sun &
hanging round together and I started to make some shots.I wasn't feeling
myself as good as them that day (I wasn't ill, just not on my mood) So I didn't stay very long , checked my shots from LCD and went home. There are some funny shots from that day. As a classic I wanted to share
this portrait with you.When I looked at the eyes,remembered an old song(in the title).I know there's an overexpose on the cheek but
from lcd it didn't look so bad:) Anyway I hope you'll like this good

Double-crested Cormorant
The Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus †) is a North American member of the cormorant family of seabirds.
This is a very common and widespread species. They breed in coastal areas as well as near inland rivers and lakes, building stick nests in trees, on cliff edges or on the ground on islands. They are gregarious birds, usually found in colonies, often with other aquatic birds. Their song is a deep, guttural grunt.
This bird feeds on the sea and fresh water lakes and rivers. It winters anywhere along the coasts that is well-supplied with fish.
This is a large black bird (29"-36"), with a wingspan up to 52". It has a long tail, yellow throat-patch, and can appear to have a green sheen in certain lighting. The white double head crest is seen for a short period during breeding season in western birds. It is duller in eastern birds. Juveniles are brown with a white face, foreneck, and breast.
Like all cormorants, the Double-crested dives to find its prey. It eats mainly fish, but also amphibians, crustaceans. This bird swims low in the water, often with just its neck and head visible, and dives from the surface. They use their feet for propulsion and are able to dive from 5-25 feet for 30-70 seconds.
After diving, these birds spend long periods standing with wings outstretched to allow them to dry, since they are not fully waterproofed. They fly low over the water, with their bills tilted slightly upward. They sometimes leaving their colony in long, single-file lines.

Greetings Sebnem. This is a great portrait. Lovely details and those eyes are great. I think the details are very good all over. The white patch is a little burnt but not too bad. Very good work.

Hi Sebnem, a fine well detailed close up portrait of this bird. A shame that the white feathers have burnt out slightly, still a fine though and I like the little catchlight in the eye.

Cool portrait, I think you were lucky to be able to getthat close to the cormorant. Perhaps a bit of work in photoshop could remove the overexposed, but its not too bad.
I like the green eye and the sharpness.

very good photo, but I guess it is not double crested cormorant (P.auritus), it is a cormorant (P.carbo).
I think, you can not find P.auritus in Turkey ;)

merhaba çok hoş bir fotoğraf.. detaylar çok iyi.. ancak tür adı yazılırken bir hata olmuş. kulaklı karabatak Tr'de olmayan bir tür. Burdaki avrupada ve tr'de en yaygın görülen "karabatak - phalacrocorax carbo"..
kulaklı karabatağın türkiyeden kaydı yok..

Beautiful close-up, Sebnem. Not always easy to catch these so close, but here, with these outstanding details, it makes it a great portrait. We have only the great cormorant where I live, so this is very interesting to see another one here. Very well done.
