Genus: Inachis

Species: I. io

The European peacock caterpillar (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the peacock caterpillar, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring. The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops.
The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, sallows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit. The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Hello Luciano,
It is easy to see why this handsome butterfly was named for the peacock. It has such vibrant and rich colors that you have captured in superb detail. Very Nicely Done! Thomas

Ciao Maurizio

A lovely capture of this butterfly with fully wings opened. Well captured with good POV.
Best wishes,
Achim

Bonjour Luciano,

Trčs belle capture. Bon focus. Superbes détails et couleurs. Toujours trčs peu de papillons ici. Par contre, je viens de voir d'autres odonates, dont un calopteryx. Il va falloir que j'arrive ŕ les photographier maintenant.
Bonne journée,
Mariki

Hello Luciano, Colorful butterfly and superb details. nice lighting and great focus. Ganesh

So you show the brighter side after displaying the duller one first, Luciano. Very clever!
Needless to say, this beautiful butterfly with its colourful wings fully open is a joy to behold.

Well done and TFS.

Hola Luciano, la toma la veo con buen color y luz, pero le falta un poco de definición, en el cuerpo de la mariposa no se observan detalles. Un saludo

Hi Luciano,
A butterfly I used to see a lot as a boy in England but I don't think I have come across it here in Israel. Its colours have always given me the illusion that some young child must have painted them on as they are so strong and vivid.Take care my friend.
Regards, David

Hi Luciano,
I bet this wasnt an easy one, you must have wanted to get atleast one shot and this must have been fluttering its wings..i see all the makings of a much craved shot deserving all the praise for the effort and good presentation.
I know how hard it can be to get them and worse when they hurriedly open their wings and then start flying or fluttering away..:)
Nice composition with good details on the wings showing off nice colours. The gravel sanded Bg compliments the butterfly very well.
TFS & Cheers

Questa me l'ero persa, Luciano, splendidi i colori della Vanessa del Pavone, fatti sentire quando rientri, ciao Silvio
