[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I got this shot of a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron on a short, last-minute trip that I made down to Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island in Florida. I had a new toy to play with (Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens), and I was getting sick of the cold, winter weather, so on a whim I flew down to Florida for a long weekend. It was in the 60s when I arrived, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I had heard so much about Ding Darling NWR, and I was very excited to make use of my new lens to try to capture some beautiful birds. Ding Darling did not disappoint! How's that for an alliteration? :D I was treated to endless amounts of beautiful water birds when I visited the refuge: ibis, egret, pelicans, herons, roseate spoonbills, etc. It was wonderful!

For this particular shot, I set up my tripod and Wimblerly gimble head on the side of the road, about 30-40 feet from the Night Heron. The park has a nice driving loop which stays close to the water the entire time, so it was easy to spot good locations where I could sit down on the shore and set up the insanely heavy tripod and lens. I used the 400mm lens with a 2X teleconverter, which gave me 800mm at f/5.6 for 1/60 second. The bird was standing relatively still, so the somewhat slow shutter speed and tripod worked in this scenario.

Great image Stephen.
This is one we haven't seen much of on Trek Nature.
What a handsome looking bird.
Its quite unlike any other Heron in body shape.
A very interesting subject,finely captured.
Perfect exposure,great colour and detail.
Very nicely taken indeed.
