Hypecoum procumbes (Sickle-Fruited Hypecoum, Horned Wild Cumin) [in Turk. Yavru Ağzı]

Today, I would like to dedicate this capture of this beautiful Cumin (in Turk. “kimyon”) flower to one of our heartfelt friend in TN, Silpa (iris) from the mainland of the true cumin (Cuminum cyminum) spices, India. I hope you can like this Silpa:)!

Hypecoum is the single genus which have 15 species belonging to family Hypecoaceae of the poppy order (Papaverales). This family is intermediate in character between the other two families of the order, Papaveraceae and Fumariaceae. They have small regular flowers with four stamens and four petals in two whorls. The inner petals often are lobed. These plants occur in warm temperate areas from the Mediterranean to eastern Asia.

Root annual, simple, perpendicular, of a pale yellow colour. Leaves glaucous, smooth: radical ones several, petiolate, pinnately multipartite: leaflets bipinnatifid, the segments linearly lanceolate, acute, entire or toothed a little: stem-leaves with shorter foot-stalks, and less divided. Scapes several, erect when in flower, but becoming procumbent or bending when in fruit, branching at point into 2 to 5 branches; at first when in flower approaching to an umbel, but afterwards lengthening out into a short of raceme. Floral-leaves many parted at the base. Pedicles erect, cylindrical, continuing to increase in size with the seed pod. Flowers yellow. Sepals 2, lanceolate, acute streaked, Petals 4, unequal, all smooth at the back; the two outer one largest, oval-oblong, concave, bluntly 3 lobed; 2 interior ones much smaller and narrower, trifid above the middle, the upper segment denticulate. Pods flat, falcate, or shaped like a sickle, taper-pointed, curved inwards, articulate or joined and furrowed with several furrows, the joints knotted.

It varies very much in size and form, according to the soil and situation in which it is grown.

I was winding up for the day and just as i checked the gallery one last time i saw your entry.And I am overjoyed .. for this is special; and the very first dedication that i have recieved on this site.That is a lot of encourgement and would propel me further ahead.It has been a great time here and your presentations have not just been visually delightful, but they have also transpired and imparted a great amount of learning to each one of us.I am indeed humbled and delighted by your dedication my friend.

I love the yellow that perks one up so much every time you set your eyes on this bright and vibrant colour.And this one does just the same to me as much as i know it has been presented especially for me.I love the composition of the twin flowers and the BG that sets the focus on the flowers completely. I see that the petals have been fashioned very peculiarly ..infact i have never seen this shape in petals in any other flower..The teacher in you performs your duty once again, for i didnt know about the cumin flowers except that i know they play an important role in our cuisine and also to a great extend in medicinal purposes.
