Queen Butterfly (Danaus gilippus)
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Danaus gilippus , or Queen butterflies are of the family Nymphalidae, the brush-footed Butterflies. It is widespread in the southwestern US and Mexico as well as Florida.
Queen caterpillars feed on milkweeds and milkweed vines which often contain cardiac glycosides. The glycosides are stored in both caterpillar and adult bodies making the bodies somewhat distasteful, even poisonous to birds and other predators. After tasting a Queen, a predator may associate the bright warning colors of the adult or caterpillar with an unpleasant meal, and avoid Queens in the future. Viceroy butterflies are thought to benefit from mimicry of the Queen.
Adults feed on nectar from flowers including milkweeds, fogfruit, and shepherd's needle.

Hello Greg,
Those wings have a 3D effect in this PoV.I find this very PoV quite interesting and the way the butterfly has been captured.Superb details picked up with great colours and lighting.I get it is sitting ona lanatana, one of the most favourite plants of butterflies.
The Bg is quite nice and well done, except for a little interference by the brown leaf.
Good accompaying notes too.
