This is probably the most common Chaser in Europe (Libellula quadrimaculata), but why is it named four-spotted when there is a total of eight spots?

It was of course Linnaeus who made that decision. Vinny in his kind critique has explained why: the four outer spots on all four wings, or pterostigma, are common to pretty well most dragonflies and it is the four inner spots that form the basis for both the vernacular and scientific names. Thank you Vinny!

I try to avoid the most common species if there are alternatives but the way this one sat with his wings tilted towards me on a perfectly diagonally placed twig made me give way. I tried to get this one from a more direct POV but he flew away not to return as they usually do so I had to be satisfied with this one.

This is the first time I have posted this common species.

Taken at a distance of about 2.5 meters (9ft), the image was slightly cropped and after size reduction selectively sharpened a little.

Hi Ivan
Lovely sharpness and detail thoughout the whole body. Sometimes it is nice to see them not head on as you can see more detail through their back area. Nice warm colours and composition. TFS
Cheers
Sue

Hello Ivan,

Excellent sharp shot of this dragonfly. Very good composition. Light and colours are perfect. Excellent bokeh. It is not a common species for me :-), I have not seen one yet. The weather is not good here, I hope it will be better when I am back from holidays in Augustus.

Cheers,
Mariki

Hello Ivan,
Your next Chaser is great, I'm impressed colour of BG which very suit to subject. I don't like contrast of colours.
Regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan

'Why four-spotted?' The four spots refer to the ones halfway along the wing - the ones at the end are found on many other dragonfly species. It may be a common species but you have captured it well - great DOF, sharpness and exposure.

Vinny

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful close up.Details are crisp clear and tack sharp.POV,cross framing, colors and composition are perfect.
Thanks for posting.

9 feet indicates good glass in that lens Ivan. To be that far and yet still come out as sharp as if you were close and almost in macro. Nice gear. Nice eye...and good notations as well...May you have a good weekend of prayerful singing and image taking...

Hola Sr. Ivan.
What a great surprise to find this great photo taken with a 300mm lens. Some times we try to get very close to the main subjet to have a good Macro, but we lost focus in some areas, and many many times they just go away. This is a very good lesson for me to learn for the future in small insects.

Hi Ivan,
Harmonious colors and nice composition. I liked the POV, it helps to see all the details. Thanks

Hi Ivan,

I looked at this wonderful Chaser and then read how "common" it is. What's common in Europe may not be so common in other parts of the world. I see very few dragonflies here - haven't seen one this summer. Interesting about the four spots which you show in excellent detail. The whole Chaser razor sharp with beautiful colors. Excellent notes.

Hi Ivan

Sorry for being a bit late...i was on a long hike yesterday and i was quite tired :)

So you did in fact get some great dragonfly shots this year, too :))
A gorgeous macro, with very good sharpness across the entire length of the body and wings of your subject.
The diagonal composition is charming and the exposure is spot-on, rendering some lovely colors, too.
Excellent POV and nice, interesting presentation.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: i've seen this species photographed in so many countries in Europe but i'm actually having trouble finding it in Romania (i barely have a few localities for it marked on the map). Weird, huh?

Hello Ivan,
What I like it this photo the most is:
1. colouration - tones are simply lovely! So delicate and beauty!
2. composition - dragonfly it presented in perfect way, it is watching in the place where a lot of free space is kept :)
3. DOF + sharpness - nothing to comment
Beautiful work Ivan!

Hi Ivan,
Saw this a long time ago...I had to come back...Such a beauty in clear sharpness and focus.Excellent results...

This simple composition is so beautiful. This could be a common one for the many of you in Europe, but not so in India.Again i bet each of the chaser that has been posted in TN has been unique and carry signatures of their composers. The same applies here too.

I love the crispiness in the shimmering wings, every little detail on the chaser stands out in shades of brown hues and the muted BG offers complete attention to the subject.Perfect DoF and lighting. The accompying notes rounds off this superb post.Very well done.

TFS & Cheers

Excellent one, Ivan.
Very good sharpness. The quality loss due to the extender must be very low.
Well done overall.
TFS
Annick

Great sharpness and emphasize on the spots. The background gives a good contrast.

Mike
