The message as to whether the honey bees are still disappearing is mixed and depends entirely on where you live and how fast science is keeping up with the newsprint. Here in Eastern Washington State, I saw a honey bee and it stayed around long enough for me to grab this image. Since we are about 2 miles from the nearest farm which brings in bees for pollination, I am not surprised. so I don't think the whole answer is yet complete. With floods, famine, earthquakes, lowering dollars and rising oil and rice prices, the bee is becoming one of the most important insects we have left for food production. Here then is mine:-) It is on a piece of thistle and since I am not allergic to the honey bee sting, even if it did sting me, I got close in enough to see it fairly clearly.

This summer, consumers swarming to local farm stands and supermarkets will find the produce extra succulent, thanks to a resurgence in honeybee pollination. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, honeybee pollination adds more than $15 billion in value to about 130 crops including berries, fruits, vegetables, and of course, flowers.

Hello Bob,

Very nice capture of this bee. Very good sharpness and wonderful colours. Here, in my area there is no problem, there are lots of bee, lots of bumble bees. I worry much more about butterflies, there was already a problem last year and I think this year it is worse.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Bob. We seem to have a lot this year and we have not had the best summer as yet. I am sure the farmers pesticides do not help. I went past a big field being sprayed today and it took your breath away so what it would do to a bee i dont know. anyway you have captured a good close up of this one. with good detail and natural looking colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Bob, a pic very easy to take but whit great details and sharpenss, perfect focus on the bee and very soft background, excellent work, have a nice day,Luciano

Ah, I too, have seen the honey bee, but then, given the distance from which we live from one another, it comes as no surprise!

I like the detail you manage to get on this capture, and as always, your notes are very informative. Since you have often shared some of your remedies for various bites, stings, and other ailments, I'll share one I discovered the other day.

Allergic to mosquitoes (that I swear are still flying in formation), a friend of mine mentioned that pure vinegar will keep them from biting. After everything else I tried, that seemed too simple.

Yesterday, knowing I would be outdoors for several hours, I figured why not, and filled a spray bottle with vinegar. Surprisingly, I was bit four times over the entire course of the day - when I first stepped out of my friend's car. As odd as it sounds, it worked!

I put the bottle on mist, and in areas where they were especially thick, I set my stuff down, and misted myself head to toe. I might've smelled like a pickle, but they did indeed leave me alone. You may already know about that one, but it's nice to share one back now and then. :)

The best part of all: environmentally friendly!

Beautiful detail, wonderful closeup. Just gorgeous!

Hello Bob,
Well, I read recently that hundreds of thousands of bees are dying in Germany and the beekeepers blame pesticides but another sure reason for the decline is the fact that bee-keeping is not a popular pastime for young people today!
Anyway, you've done your job and found a nice one that you've captured very well! Excellent details and beautiful colours and I like its pose on the flower - it looks very healthy to me!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Do you notice that when you take bee photos that they ALWAYS have their backs to you? I do. It can be very frustrating at times.

Good shot of your bee though Bob. I like how it is so sharp and your flower is very soft. Good focus on the bee.

I have heard that if the bees disappeared we'd be in a lot of trouble. And the Varoa Bee Mite disease is doing a lot of damage.

Cheers
Janice

Very sharp image of a Bee giving fine details on its abdomen and wings, Bob.
The concern about disappearing bees is genuine and symptomatic of things changing on the planet earth at an alarming rate.
Hope our fears are belied about them.

Ram

Hello Bob! Sorry I missed a lot of your work lately, I was pretty busy with the Formula One pictures and didn't have much time for coming here. I'll try to be more present from now on. Well done on this beautiful macro! I like the shallow dof and overall quality, well done my friend!

Incredibly detail image of this bumbly bee :-)
For some reason I love bees. They are all fluffy and with lovely colours and the way they take their lives to save the colony is very brave and heroic... call me crazy! ;-)
Nice and colourful shot.
Great composition and POV.
The shallow DOF is very artistic.

Well done, Bob!

Joe

Salut Bob
J'aime beaucoup cette composition avec cette abeille qui est après se gonfler de pollens après cette fleur.
Très beaux détails et belles couleurs et beau BG
Bravo et merci....JP

Ciao Bob, splendid bee with great sharpness and fine details, wonderful colorful BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Nice use of macro! Nicly done Bob! Unfortunatly I am allergic to hornets, and possibly bees... which is why I stay away from them, exept when there flying on flowers which are hard to capture a photo when there constantly moving. Thanks for sharing! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Great capture... nice macro... good clarity.

According to this article that was only two hours old at the time of this posting... the bee problem is growing and approaching epidemic proportions. Higher food costs will result... and that is on top of other things making food cost more.

The causes of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) are not known, but insecticides are suspected for playing a roll. It is a very strange phenomena.

Hi Bob,

A nice close-up shot of the bee which is taking pollen from the flower. The details and colors of the insect are clear and sharp. The subject is well frame. The quality of the light allows the colors to be at their best. Have a nice day.

Pierre
