Is this bird identified correctly? I've never seen one before, and as luck would have it, he was in the shade, but also, the sun was shining brightly right beside him. An unusual combination to work with!

This bird seemed rather friendly. We were eating lunch outdoors when he showed up on a tree several feet away. He watched us, then walked up the tree much like a nuthatch - but I couldn't find this combination in my guide book. Am I correct in my understanding that chickadees share that trait with the nuthatch? I know, I know, I'm asking a lot of questions, but what better way to learn? Most of you are far more aware of birds, their habitats, and their habits than I am; that's excellent for me because unlike the universities, I get to learn here free of charge! :)

This bird did do something I have never seen before, he seemed to want to play peek-a-boo with us. Once noticed, he'd hide behind a branch, but if ignored, he'd come out again. Twice he came out, interested in my camera, but when I picked it up and aimed, he'd duck under the branch so quick, that twice I missed the action. If a bird was ever a ham, this fellow qualifies. When we left, I think he pouted, but then, that could be my perception.

hello Kathy

me too i am not a bird expert, but it is the Black-Capped Chickadee,

and the excellent luminosity of the image,

Hi Kathy, it sure looks like a Black-capped Chickadee to me. It's no surprise that you haven't seen a lot of these in Washington. These are considered to be a more eastern bird. You caught this one well, and they can be a little skittish, and difficult to shoot. Your colour is good, with very good detail seen on the bird. It looks like it just came from a bath. You caught it in a great pose, and with a good catch light in that eye. W.r.t. your comparison between these and the nuthatches, I found the nuthatches are a little smaller, or at least slimmer, and while both birds can run up a trunk, the nuthatches can also run down.

Thanks, John

you make me laugh, Kathy, I love reading your notes. And yes, this is a black-capped chickadee that you found in all its curiosity of you and your camera, playing in the branches to hide itself and come out again. They're the funniest birds to watch because of all its "aliveliness". I am very happy for you to have discover the fun to watch these beautiful little creatures. Your picture is beautiful, very well captured with all the details of this fantastic bird. Thank you!
