Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a good-sized city, but there are plenty of natural spaces to be found within the city limits. Behind my mother's house, for example, is a wooded ravine that is home to deer, wild turkeys, and smaller creatures, including this little fella (or lass?), a gregarious toad who seemed entirely comfortable posing for photos.
This appears to be a Bufo americanus (American toad), although I am no expert, and would appreciate any helpful insights form other TN'ers. It was about 2.5 to 3 inches from snout to rump.
UPDATE: Thank you, jpdenk, for raising the possibility that this might be a Bufo fowleri (Fowler's toad). I will review my other photos of this to see if I can determine which it is. |

Hi Randy,
A pleasing shot of this little creature. Can't say for certain as to what species it is, could also be a Fowler's Toad, have to see the bumps on top to ID it for certain.
Thanks,
John

Exelente foto muito bem composta no momento certo que o sapinho curioso olhava parabéns.

Excelente enfoque y gran composición Randy. La naturalidad en los colores es impresionante. Un bello trabajo.

Hi Randy,
creatively well chosen point of view to have an intense encounter at eye level. I like those subdued colours, and the well managed light on dark parts. The background's strong contrasts with a very dark area in the centre is a bit distacting, and may be worth a PP treatment applying highly transparent light-coloured spraypaint selectively on those areas to soften the contrasts in the back.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
P.S.: You helped me improving my English by forcing me to look up what "gregarious" means - a word that was not yet part of my active vocabulary. From now on it will be when it comes to switch off my computer in order to go out.
