[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Libellula quadrimaculata - Four-spotted Chaser

The male and female are alike with a brownish body, golden marks on the sides of the abdomen and dark tips to the ends of the abdomen. Yellow and black basal wing patches with two black dots on each wing, give the wing a more patterned appearance than in the other two species. Close-up views of this insect can be readily obtained by waiting near its favoured perch, I chose a long view here because a) I wanted something different to a macro and b) cos I couldn't get close enough :-), despite 1.5 hours of trying. It has a long flight period, from early May to the middle of August.

It is the most common and widespread of the county's chasers, being found from coastal areas, heathland pools, ponds, ditches, canals and mineral workings. It is also common and widespread across most of the country.

Notes are from this site. I hope you like it.

Paul, it's indeed a different approach, considering it's a macro.

The picture is very nice, though. It has a perfect sharpness and excellent blurred bg. The composition is great too.

Finally, the dragonfly does seem very solitary to me.

Hi Paul, This indeed a diffrent composition. I applaud you for this unique shot. I like it. There is alot of open space, but it works for me here.

Scott

The composition does draw attention, Paul. IMHO, I think the wide open spaces to the right is a bit much. It looses the impact that I have come accustomed to in all your photos. But composition is subjective and depends entirely on personal interpretation.

One does get the impression that it is a very lonely dragonfly though. I tried my hand at a WS with a different compo, please tell me what you think of my personal interpretation.

Very nice shot, Paul.
Maybe too much space to the right.
Nice POV, good light and colours and very good sharpness
Very well done.

Wow, wonderful shot Paul. Beautiful composition. Just perfect! Thank you.

Hello Paul! Well, I commiserate entirely with the gettin' close enough issue..it seems that at certain times they are very co-operative and others, well, you know..Hey, I like way you've composed this with plenty of space for the dragon to fly into! ;-)))) Well done on this lonely dragon approach!!

It's a lonely world out there.

It works, I'm trying to cut the space as a crop in mind and cannot come up with a success, this works. Your positioning of the Chaser is perfect.
I like the artistic approach to images and that is what photography is about, Art, perspective, realism. You've brought that in.

Congrats and well done on this composition and details. An unorthidox approach here at Trek N. and it's time to push the bar from science to Science and art without manipulation of software.
Thumbs up friend.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike

Hello Paul!
Wonderful work.Lighting,DOF,BG and composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

At first, from the thumbnail, I thought it must be a photo of "the one that got away" ;-)) But he's there all right.
My personal preference would have been to go closer, but this way you really get an idea of what their favourite perches look like. Light is good, details seem to be spot on judging from a distance, subject nicely separated from the bg.

Hi Paul!
Wonderful, artistic close up.Lighting, framing and composition are great. Thanks for sharing.
