Roatan Spiny-tailed Iguana

Endemic to Roatan, one of the Bay Islands off the North Atlantic side of Honduras, C. oedirhina is a dark brown or black iguana with light blotches or bands. Male average 60 cm (23 ½ inches) total length and females are around 40 cm (16 inches). This iguana is rather stout and has a distinctive blunt head and bulbous nose. C. oedirhina is becoming rare on Roatan.

Ctenosaura is a genus of lizard commonly known as spinytail iguanas within the large lizard family, Iguanidae and are native to Mexico and Central America. They range in size (total length, including the tail) from about 5 inches to well over one meter. The distinctive feature of this genus is the enlarged, spiny scales of the tail. Ctenousaurs are generally omnivorous, feeding on fruits, flowers, foliage, as well as on small animals. Some members of this genus are popular as pets. There are at least two species, Ctenosaura pectinata and Ctenosaura similis, introduced into the United States in south Texas, and Miami, Florida.

The world record sprint speed for lizards (21.5 miles/h or 34.6 km/h) was attained by the Costa Rican spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura similis).

Ah een Blijdorper, Thijs. Een gebuur van de gorilla, hoe heet ie ook al weer...:-)
Positief vind ik de DOF. Meestal duiken dan wel problemen op.
Mooi in 't kader en een niet onaardig beestje.
Bedankt
Annick

What a "sneaky" smile this fellow has - he certainly gave you a very good pose for this photo. I like the way you blended in the colours of the Inguana with the background in this photo.

Betsie

Hi Thijs

As far as I can tell this is the 1st image of the Ctenosaura oedirhina - Roatan Spiny-tailed iguana on the site. There are some shots of other spiny-tailed iguanas, but those are not of the same species. So, thanks for this introduction and therefore I attached it to my "RARE or SIGNIFICANT contributions to TN" theme series.

You managed to capture a perfect image showing sharp details of the reptile and a lovely catchlight in the eye. The closeness of the crop worked well to make this slightly private yet there is still some space for the subject to move. The BG was well isolated thus complimenting the iguana.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Thijs.
Fantastic image of an amazing reptile. I think the best portrait of this beauty is not exist. Terrific sharpness and details of the animal. Reproduction of its colouration is the best too. Smooth nice BG is simply great for this razor sharp main subject. Bravo and TFS. Well done.
Alexei.
P.S. Thanks a lot for high estimation of my spider shot and mark it as favorite.

Hello Thijs,
Nice close up, excellent sharpness and depth of field, very good textures and details in the skin, nice natural colors, good catchliht and great pose.
